Through sanctuaries, NMSF seeks to promote sound ocean policies that improve resource protection, strengthen scientific understanding, forge partnerships, and enhance ocean governance. Through our efforts, national leaders become better equipped to make informed and coordinated decisions that can improve the overall health and sustainability of the ocean, coastal, and Great Lakes ecosystems now and for the future.

Position Overview

NMSF, a private, non-profit organization, is seeking a Visual Communications Intern for the summer term. The Visual Communications Intern will work with the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation staff in Silver Spring, Maryland.

This position will assist the Strategic Communications Director in creating and publishing content that promotes the Foundation’s work. The internship is unpaid and the term runs for 12 weeks from May to August. The Visual Communications Intern will be expected to dedicate at least 20 hours per week to the Foundation.

The Visual Communications Intern will assist in planning and developing content for the various platforms the Foundation uses to communicate its messages. This position is ideal for a current student with graphic design and video production experience who wants to use their talents to benefit environmental preservation.

Responsibilities

Typical tasks may include:

  • Photo editing and archiving
  • Graphic design to accompany written content
  • Drafting layout and design for print and digital platforms
  • Offering ideas as to how to improve or visually complement existing content
  • Assisting the Strategic Communications Director in planning and producing content
  • Assisting the Foundation in promoting its annual conference, Capitol Hill Ocean Week

Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited college or university. Majors in communications, graphic design, environmental science, marine science, or other related fields are preferred
  • Must be available to work at least 20 hours per week
  • Must have full availability the week of June 12
  • Experience with design applications such as Photoshop, Lightroom, and/or InDesign
  • Proficient with social media. Web design experience is a plus
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize projects and deliver on strict deadlines
  • Proficient working independently and collaboratively
  • Knowledge of marine science policy or environmental policy a plus
