About the ULI Center for Sustainability and Economic Performance

The ULI Center for Sustainability and Economic Performance is dedicated to heathy, resilient and high performing communities worldwide. The Center houses ULI’s Greenprint, Building Healthy Places and Urban Resilience Programs. The Urban Resilience program helps cities prepare for the expected effects of climate change. From rising sea levels to more frequent storm events to extended droughts, the changing climate poses short- and long-term risks and opportunities for urban planning and development.

The Urban Resilience program provides resources and strategies to mitigate those risks and to create a more resilient and durable vision for community development. About the Role 

ULI is pleased to announce the Vice President, Resilience position! Reporting to the SVP, Center for Sustainability and Economic Performance, the Vice President will lead ULI’s research and publications, training, technical assistance and educational activities on resilience topics, to enhance environmental performance, economic opportunity and social equity.

The Vice President will oversee partnerships with community-based organizations to advise on how to enhance resilience through innovative approaches to land use and development. The successful candidate will focus on how buildings, cities and communities can be more resilient to the impacts of climate change and other environmental vulnerabilities. The goal of the program is to advance understanding of climate risk and resilience strategies in the real estate industry and the public sector, to better assess and mitigate these risks in cities worldwide.

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Developing ULI’s Resilience strategy, technical assistance program, research agenda and programing for major member convenings.
  • Hiring, training and managing staff working to implement the initiatives’ program of work.
  • Speak on behalf of ULI to the media on resilience issues, serving as an expert resource and advisor to ULI members, district councils and staff.
  • Assist in attracting sponsorships and foundation grant funds for the Urban Resilience Initiative.
  • Identify additional partnerships with groups outside ULI to further the mission of the Center for Sustainability and Economic Performance and ULI.
  • Supporting resilience programming at ULI District and National Councils.
  • Lead planner of annual ULI Resilience Conference and resilience programming at ULI’s spring/fall meeting and events.
  • Managing internal staff and external contractors.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with key coalition partners and current and prospective funders.
  • Travel: likely a minimum of four trips per year; determined by programming and program goals.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate for the Vice President position will have progressively responsible experience managing multiple projects with different configurations of staff and funding sources, combined with strong knowledge of the business case for resilience and how land use strategy, real estate investment and building design can support climate adaptation.

Specific requirements include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in real estate, sustainability, urban planning or engineering or related degree. Advanced degree in business, management, urban planning, or a related field helpful.
  • 7-10 years’ experience in sustainability related work, with at least two years directing programs on resilience or broader sustainability goals.
  • Extensive knowledge, experience, and expertise in the intersection of real estate and/or urban planning and sustainability and resilience issues. (Including real estate development and finance, land use planning and policy.).
  • Broad knowledge of the science of physical risk and long-term impact of climate change on real estate and land use.
  • Ability to lead small group workshops as well as ULI Technical Assistance Panels and Advisory Service Panels.
  • Media training: experience serving as a spokesperson for programs and working with the media.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with an ability to manage several projects simultaneously.
  • Stakeholder management and member relations ability (facilitation, building consensus, and keeping members active and engaged in program activities).
  • Ability to design and manage large complex research projects and manage junior researchers in support of a larger research plan for the Initiative.
  • Design and programming for high-profile events, including ULI’s Spring and Fall Meeting.
  • Strong facilitation skills, and ability to work across staff and volunteers, as well as managing program activities across departments, often with partnerships with broader coalitions.
  • Personal commitment to environmental sustainability and resilience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, web design (WordPress), general design (InDesign), and business development software systems a plus.
  • Availability to travel (minimum four events per year).
