Position Overview
The Vice President of Philanthropy supports IFAW's mission by creating innovative marketing strategies that will lead to increased awareness, fundraising revenue, relevance and respect among our current target donor audience(s) as well as identifying new audiences to meet our fundraising needs into the future.
The incumbent must possess highly developed communication and leadership skills, with proven fundraising success in traditional and innovative campaigns across the broad spectrum of today's marketing channels. S/he must be a strategic leader who can inspire, grow and diversify revenue that supports our commitment to animal welfare.
The incumbent will work collaboratively with the VP Programs and the VP Communications to ensure communication and program integration that will drive marketing and fundraising efforts to increase IFAW's financial growth targets.
Responsibilities
- Develop high-level marketing and fundraising strategy in line with the strategic vision of the organization.
- Create multi-channel campaigns and initiatives that will drive and increase fundraising revenue.
- Align the fundraising functions of the organization around the brand, and work collaboratively with Programs and Communications to build support for marketing and fundraising objectives.
- Seek out new promotional avenues to support fundraising and program objectives.
- Provide on-going guidance, direction and training, as needed, to senior and departmental staff worldwide (including consultants); develop and motivate, delegate appropriately and ensure strong internal communication and coordination; evaluate performance and provide opportunities for personal and professional growth.
- Facilitate the engagement of program and country staff in fundraising efforts.
- Develop and leverage powerful donor & influencer networks to create a lead generation machine for the Department of Philanthropy.
- Work collaboratively with Programs and Communications to drive awareness so that IFAW is seen as a leader and donors' charity of choice in the animal welfare sector.
- Develop a donor-centered marketing strategy for all donor types and structure the Department of Philanthropy to best serve this strategy.
- Support the CEO in his work with the Board to cultivate new funding prospects and effectively steward current major donors.
- Execute expert business planning with strong bias to action.
Key Areas of Focus
Planning & Business Strategy:
- Pioneer and implement measurable strategies that will drive hard revenue goals and increase awareness at national and global levels.
- Create a solid plan to reach new potential Major Donors that leverages linkages, targeting and value proposition development.
- Develop a donor-centered marketing plan that reaches target segments quickly and effectively utilizing all channels.
- Mobilize teams to "get the plan off the page" with efficiency and flexibility - measuring results and adjusting the plan to reach aggressive goals quickly.
Building Engagement Networks:
- Find, develop and leverage supporters and donors who have time, money, expertise and connections.
- Build and leverage connections to ensure that influencers within target regions and demographics know and love IFAW's work.
- Leverage these relationships to broaden IFAW's reach and impact so that we can do more with less (i.e. Corporate Partnerships, In-Kind Support, Celebrity Ambassadors, etc.).
Digital Presence:
- Establish a best in class web presence that drives donations and advocate support, and supports aggressive fundraising and awareness growth goals.
- Work collaboratively with Communications to lead online team to create a best in class social media presence that empowers stakeholders to become IFAW brand advocates.
- Work collaboratively with Communications to develop innovative social media campaigns that increase quality fans and followers and turn them into donors.
Donor Communications:
- Mastermind and execute innovative donor communications strategies to educate and inform current supporters about activities and accomplishments.
- Design a donor communication plan that motivates supporters to move up the giving ladder, increasing their levels of support over time.
Brand Building and Story Telling for Fundraising:
- In consultation with the VP of Communications, develop and strengthen IFAW's unique and compelling voice to build brand awareness, relevance, reputation and esteem among target donor audiences.
- Ensure that the brand is strong and consistent in every marketing tactic, and that IFAW's program objectives are communicated with drama, creativity and impact.
- Lead the creation/production of inspiring design, content and campaigns that builds the brand among supporters and drives donations.
- Hire, develop and retain competent staff to carry out the fundraising mission of IFAW.
Qualifications
Requirements:
- Experience in senior fund-raising positions with a proven ability to meet or exceed fundraising goals.
- International experience preferred.
- Proven expertise advancing a diversified funding model.
- Excellent verbal, interpersonal and written communication abilities, including public speaking and presentation skills.
- Extensive knowledge of and interest in international philanthropy.
- Leadership within a matrix-driven organization is preferred; ability to effectively collaborate across functions and geographies.
