Description
~ As the voice of the U.S. standards and conformity assessment system, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) empowers its members and constituents to strengthen the U.S. marketplace position in the global economy while helping to assure the safety and health of consumers and the protection of the environment. ~
The Institute oversees the creation, promulgation and use of thousands of norms and guidelines that directly impact businesses in nearly every sector: from acoustical devices to construction equipment, from dairy and livestock production to energy distribution, and many more.
ANSI is also actively engaged in accrediting programs that assess conformance to standards - including globally-recognized cross-sector programs such as the ISO 9000 (quality) and ISO 14000 (environmental) management systems.
Position Overview
Direct the overall liaison and coordination of ANSI's activities with international and regional organizations (i.e. ISO, IEC, CEN, CENELEC, ETSI, COPANT, PASC) and their national member bodies, and to represent the interests of the U.S. voluntary standardization community in these fora. Direct the overall ANSI international policy activities with applicable U.S. government bodies.
Responsibilities
Essential Functions
- Formulate with the ANSI International Policy Committee U.S. positions to international and regional meetings, and provide staff support;
- Formulate with ANSI ISO Council U.S. positions to ISO Council, General Assembly and related ISO policy matters, and provide staff support;
- Coordinate and promote positions with officers of the USNC Council to project unified American positions on joint policy subjects in IEC and ISO;
- Foster and maintain close relations with, and provide staff support for regional activities in order to strengthen relationships with Europe (CEN, CENELEC, ETSI, European Commission, U.S. Mission to the EU), the Pan American Standards Commission (COPANT), the Pacific Area Standards Congress (PASC), and coordination with the U.S. Trade Representative's office on APEC (Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation), and other regions or countries (i.e. Central Europe, Middle East and South America), with specific emphasis on the People's Republic of China and India;
- Work closely with ANSI Government Relations staff, the International Trade Administration of the US Department of Commerce, and other applicable USG agencies regarding its standards and CA related activities;
- Actively participate as a team member of the senior executive staff of the Institute, representing the interests of the international policy team to ensure a coordinated message in this aspect of ANSI's mission; and
- Prepare and disseminate timely reports on international and regional standards activities.
Additional Responsibilities
Position requires extensive travel abroad and in the US.
Qualifications
Education and Training
- Bachelor's degree required, further study a plus;
- 15 plus years in organizing and conducting broad-based meetings, proven competence in multi-cultural work environments; and
- Second language (French or Spanish) helpful.
Skills and Experience
- Excellent communication, presentation, organizational, leadership skills, and a team player;
- Ability to exercise discretion and solid judgment when operating in highly political environments; and
- Sound technical skills, analytical ability, good judgment and strong operational focus.
