Position Overview 

The CBF seeks a Vice President of Development to be based at their Philip Merrill Environmental Center headquarters located in Annapolis, MD.  

The Vice President for Development serves as a key leader and critical senior team member assisting the organization in achieving its strategic and long-term goals and reports directly to the President. The Vice President's portfolio includes local, regional, and national strategic planning, implementation and oversight of all membership, annual, major gift, planned giving, and campaign fundraising programs, as well as supporting services and special events.

In addition, the Vice President is responsible for leading a team that is proficient in donor data base management; gift processing and acknowledgement working closely with Administration on Development contract management; financial management and reporting of contributed revenue working closely with the Chief Financial Officer. 

Responsibilities  

Essential functions include: 

  • Build a skillful, well-coordinated, and mutually supportive team of development professionals with integrated fundraising goals and programs. 
  • Lead team with primary responsibilities for raising adequate funding for CBF's annual core and campaign programs and to add to CBF's endowment. Continue to increase funds raised for CBF's annual operations and programs.
  • Engage with current donors and donor prospects in the region as part of the donor cultivation and solicitation process.
  • Collaborate with CBF's Executive Management Team (EMT) to project funding needs for current and future CBF programs and operations.
  • Foster understanding within CBF about how development activities can serve to augment the policy and program goals of the organization and facilitate program staff's involvement in philanthropy. 
  • Partner with the President, Board, Presidents Advisory Committee (PAC) and staff to identify individuals, foundations, and corporations to solicit for large contributions. 
  • Cultivate the membership program, making sure the program achieves its potential to generate net revenue.
  • Oversee preparation of development staff work plans, budgets, and monitor progress toward achieving key department goals.
  • Prepare management and financial reports for President, Board, and Finance department. Participation in Board committees, as needed.

Qualifications 

Professional Experience & Qualifications: 

  • A demonstrated track record in raising funds through a variety of programs, including individual donors, capital campaign, direct mail, foundations, corporations, etc.
  • Superb organizational and interpersonal skills, combined with the ability to diplomatically prioritize sometimes-conflicting demands.
  • Additionally, candidate must possess a proven ability to forecast and manage a complex budget; ability to lead, inspire and manage a professional staff.
  • Candidate must have superior written and oral communication skills and a solid professional presence, combined with exceptional leadership skills; demonstrated ability to think strategically and a capacity to write fluently and persuasively.
  • A commitment to broad conservation principles and management of natural resources as related to the mission of CBF is a must. 

Compensation: CBF offers a comprehensive benefits package to include: 20 vacation days, 10 sick days, health, vision, dental, life insurance, and a tax deferred annuity plan.
