Description
Duties:
The internship sponsor, a pharmaceutical firm, is integrating information from multiple environmental, health and safety databases due to a company merger. As part of the integration process, these databases are being standardized and utilized to assure environmental and safety performance. From these databases, specified materials and products will be screened, evaluated and sorted onto lists that will then be used to identify manufacturing plants around the world that may need special attention relative to products that they manufacture.
Specific tasks include:
- Merging the product lists of three companies into a single database
- Reviewing test reports and on-line Material Safety Data Sheets to identify information about each product relative to physical and chemical properties, toxicology and aquatic toxicology.
- Available environmental fate and effect data will also need to be captured.
- Identifying products of concern and the company facilities and contractors where they are manufactured.
- Following up with these facilities (globally) to address identified concerns and to document waste management practices.
- Upon completion of this project, the sponsor would like the ECO Associate to deliver: 1. A database incorporating all desired information from internal reports and on-line MSDS. 2. Identification of facilities where products of concern are manufactured. 3. A summary of related waste management practices for each identified facility.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor degree in Biology or Microbiology, Toxicology or Chemical Engineering.
- An understanding of basic terminology relative to toxicology (e.g., acute toxicity, chronic toxicity, no observed effect level, etc.).
- The ability to work independently and to have good communication skills on the telephone.
- Writing skills are needed to prepare memos for inquiring about practices at manufacturing plants.
- US Citizenship or existing work permit required.
