Position Overview: 

Scientific Certification Systems seeks an experienced technical writer capable of delving into our 6 program areas that certify sustainability to produce white papers, web content, articles and conference presentations for selected industry publications and trade shows. 

Applicant must have a strong sense of curiosity, an ability to grasp scientific concepts and the capacity to organize the information into well-written content. The selected individual will be comfortable interfacing with internal scientists and program associates as well as confident in conversations with external conference organizers and selected trade publications.  Personal traits include flexibility, patience and a positive attitude while multi-tasking across industry segments.

Responsibilities:

• Work with knowledge experts in Forestry, Climate, Life Cycle, Green Building, Food & Agriculture and Retail programs to produce white papers and articles that target business, government, education and non-profit audiences;
• Grasp the distinct interests and perspectives of the different audiences and craft content that serves those needs while preserving a science-based approach;
• Look ahead to industry conference and submit presentation summaries to conference organizers in an effort to create appropriate speaking opportunities for executives;
• Prepare content in the appropriate format - white paper, bylined articles and PowerPoint presentations

Qualifications:

• Experience with scientific or technical content, preferably in the sustainability industry
• Success in working with conferences and highly-targeted trade publications
• Computer skills: MS Word, MS Outlook, MS Excel; MS PowerPoint
• Willing to learn unique aspects of each segment and SCS's perspective on how climate change, resource consumption and objective certification fits into each niche;
• Calmness under pressure; flexibility in partnering with scientists and program associates to skillfully shape the content;
• Must be willing to work normal hours, 5 days per week at our Emeryville office.

Compensation: Compensation is based on qualifications and prior experience. SCS offers a competitive benefits package including vacation, health, dental, profit sharing, performance bonuses, and 401(k).
