The Collaborative Labeling and Appliance Standards Program (CLASP) is an international nonprofit organization that works to reduce the environmental impacts of energy-using products as the primary resource for appliance energy efficiency standards and labeling (S&L)worldwide.

CLASP organizes teams of local and international experts to provide best practice technical advice to governments and organizations working to develop energy efficiency S&L policies. CLASP's projects result in major improvements in the energy efficiency of appliances, lighting, and equipment; enhanced institutional capacity to develop energy efficiency S&L policies and programs at local, regional, and international levels; considerable reductions in electricity consumption; and significant abatement of greenhouse gas emissions.

Position Overview:

The Technical Associate will be part of CLASP's US Program team, which provides best practice technical analysis on appliance standards and labeling in the US with an emphasis on the development and improvement of test procedures. S/he will work closely with US Government partner agencies and laboratories on the development, application, and documentation of appliance and equipment energy efficiency test procedures, specifically on prioritization studies, with the end goal of identifying products with significant potential for energy savings.

The ideal candidate will be a recent PhD recipient with experience or demonstrated familiarity in the analysis of end-use technologies or energy efficiency products in the residential and/or commercial sector. The Technical Associate will report to the Director of US Programs/Chief Technical Advisor, Testing. 

Responsibilities:

The Technical Associate will perform the following and other duties as assigned:

  • Research and analyze technical data for product specific residential and commercial appliances and equipment.
  • Develop quantitative and analytical tools, including complex spreadsheets for energy and economic analysis.
  • Collaborate with US Government partner agency experts to identify products with significant potential for energy savings.
  • Provide timely technical support and advice to key partners and stakeholders.
  • Prepare technical material for meetings, presentations, and conferences.
  • Interact with government agencies and industry associations engaged in product energy efficiency standards, labeling activities, and certification programs.
  • Participate in international and national technical working groups in support of test procedure development.
  • Communicate research results through technical documentation and oral presentations at technical meetings.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in engineering, environmental studies, or physical sciences, or equivalent professional background, with experience in independent design, processing, and analysis of data; PhD a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and work with large amounts of data using various types of platforms (such as simulations tools, spreadsheets, and database programs) to perform analysis
  • Experience performing economic and engineering analysis
  • Prior experience conducting technical and/or policy research
  • Ability to interpret, understand, and evaluate technical data for appliance and equipment efficiency improvement
  • Ability to collaborate successfully with colleagues and external partners
  • Proven written communication skills as lead or co-author of technical papers, reports, and refereed journal articles
  • A personal orientation that emphasizes best practice regardless of the source, teamwork ahead of getting credit, and high-quality technically-based project design and implementation
  • Background or a demonstrated interest in energy efficiency issues and/or the environmental impact of products
  • Excellent analytical skills and proven ability to write clear and concise reports or briefings in English
  • An understanding of government energy efficiency and/or environmental policy required; understanding of the policy tools applied in standards and labels development a plus
  • Familiarity or interest in product policy for energy-using products; the analytical, modeling, and policy tools applied in market transformation policy; and the role of governments in product policy

Compensation: CLASP offers an excellent benefits package and a competitive salary that is commensurate with experience. This position will be based in Washington, DC, with travel to global CLASP offices and elsewhere as necessary.
