Description
The John Dorr Nature Laboratory is one of the 4 campuses of the Horace Mann School and is the school's outdoor education center. The school is an independent, co-educational day school located in New York City and is comprised of 1,781 students in nursery years through high school. The Dorr Lab is located on 265 acres of land in Washington, Connecticut, a small community in the western part of the state. The rural setting of the campus provides an ideal site for adventure and environmental education programs.
Position Overview:
Programs are conducted for students in nursery years through the twelfth grade, and last from 1-8 days. All programs are designed to enhance the curriculum at the school. The programs at each grade level are distinct in themselves; however, the one thread that is common to all of the programs is that they are designed to emphasize the cooperative aspects of living and learning as opposed to competition and individualization.
Qualifications:
The position requires a person who enjoys working with students of all ages, who has a minimum of a bachelor's degree, and who has experience in the following areas: teaching environmental and adventure education; facilitating group problem-solving; experience with rock climbing and rope courses; backpacking and camping; ability to work interdependently as well as alone on projects; and Wilderness First Responder training.
This is a full-time faculty position. The person filling it must be available from August 10, 2009 through June 16, 2010.
Compensation: Highly competitive. Housing is provided.
