Columbia power was incorporated in 2005 to research, develop, design and deploy point absorber wave energy buoys for the purpose of generating utility-scale electricity. Columbia Power is a division of Greenlight Energy Resources. Greenlight is a private investment company focused on the renewable energy sector, and was formed to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy. Greenlight has 4 operating companies in the wind, solar, biofuels and wave energy industries.
Position Overview:
Develop system level designs and engineers mechanical components and sub systems for Columbia Power's wave energy buoy products.
Reports to: Vice President of Research and Development
Responsibilities:
Works in a team environment to design and engineer systems and subsystems of a large displacement wave energy converter. Interprets design and performance specifications and develops low-cost, long-life and survivable design solutions. Works with research engineers to interpret performance requirements and transistion to final design. Works with sub contractors to ensure smooth integration of design and fabrication. Performs mechanical, structural and thermal design analysis of various components and systems.
Some engineering oversight of manufacturing and assembly. Design work will include cost and budget estimates. Integrates multiple systems and subsystems into a comprehensive design that will be fully certified for deployment. Works with Certifying agencies to ensure standards are met.
Qualifications:
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architectural Engineering
- Minimum of 7 years experience as a practicing engineer.
- Fluent in 3D CAD design and drafting (SolidWorks preferred)
- System integration experience on marine systems
- Design experience with cooling systems, corrosion prevention, material selection, bearings, seals, rotary mechanisms and equipment layout.
- Structural design experience
- Comprehensive multidiscipline engineering background with competence in electrical, mechanical, hydrodynamic, thermal, environmental, mooring, and naval systems integration.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Skilled in delivering presentations, documentation and reports.
- Well organized with teamwork orientation. Highly energetic with a willingness to meet demanding schedules on time and on or under budget.
Additional Experience desired:
- System level oversight of designs
- 5 or more years of Naval architectural design & integration
- Experience analyzing corrosion implications of material and component selection
- Previous experience with interface control documents
- Composite structure design
- Prior experience preparing design packages for certifying agencies
- Energy industry background
- Prior experience with high-torque rotary applications
- Professional engineer (PE) license
- Ballast design experience control
Required Education: BSME, B.S.E.Nav
Compensation: $85,000.00 - $100,000.00 (Yearly Salary). Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Company Location: Columbia Power research and engineering operations are located in Corvallis, Oregon. Corporate offices are located in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Relocation: Negotiable
Travel: Regional and international travel is expected
Start Date: March, 2010 (or earlier if desired)
