Sycan Marsh Field Technician

The Sycan Marsh (SM) Field Technician will conduct non-native weed control, monitor weed species, and assist the SM Land Manager with general maintenance.

Specifically, position will apply herbicide or hand-pull weed species from previously identified infestation locations, monitor weed cover and distribution with a Global Positioning System (GPS) unit and field computer, map new weed infestations, download and manage data from field computers, repair fences, and perform other general maintenance. Position requires working closely as part of a team, as well as working alone.

Required experience includes a high school diploma or GED and at least one field season of relevant work experience. Experience with field/desktop computers and software proficiency (spreadsheets/word processing/databases) and plant identification is preferred.

Physical requirements of the job include the ability to swim, hike 8-10 miles a day, lift 80 pounds, and carry a herbicide application pack (approximately 15 pounds) for extended periods of time. Applicants must be willing to work outdoors on a wetland marsh under variable weather conditions, often including extreme temperatures and biting insects. A valid driver's license and the ability to drive an all-terrain vehicle is required. This position is based on The Nature Conservancy's Sycan Marsh Preserve near Silver Lake, Oregon.

The Sycan Marsh Field Technician is a non-exempt position supervised by the SM Land Manager. The position begins May 1, 2002, and ends in August 31, 2002. Two positions are available. The SM Field Technician will be paid $8.00/hour for 40 hours/ week. A wooden-floored, canvas-walled tent with a cot will be provided for sleeping. Modern kitchen and shower facilities are available in the nearby research station.
