Position Overview
The City of Baltimore has recently created an Environmental Sub-Cabinet that develops and coordinates City policies and programs to improve the environmental performance of City operations within a sustainable framework.
As staff to this body, the Baltimore Office of Sustainability is developing a sustainable purchasing program to be integrated throughout City operations. With an annual budget of over $1.5 billion and nearly 11,000 employees, the City of Baltimore has a tremendous opportunity to make improve supply chain sustainability while serving as an example to the community. The Sustainable Purchasing Intern will help formulate and implement the sustainable purchasing program.
General Responsibilities
- Research sustainable purchasing policies from other governments and large organizations
- Work with purchasing staff to develop understanding of current City purchasing processes and policies
- Analyze best practices
- Collect and organize resources for sustainable vendors and products
- Draft policy proposals
- Present findings and recommendations to various levels of City staff
Qualifications
- Commitment of at least 15/hours a week
- Working knowledge of sustainable purchasing concepts
- Adept researcher
- Effective communicator with ability to convey the benefits of sustainable purchasing
- Well-organized and self-directed individual who is a team player
- Ability to creatively problem solve
- Desire to make Baltimore a national leader in sustainability
