Description
The Narayever is a small traditional egalitarian congregation in the Annex near Brunswick and Harbord. We host a weekly Kiddush lunch following Saturday morning services, for 100-220 people. In addition, we host small meals throughout the year including weekly breakfasts for 12-15 people, various holiday celebrations for the congregation, occasional dinners for groups of 20-70, as well as private events such as baby namings and Bar/Bat Mitzvah lunches.
The Narayever has a kosher dairy kitchen (fish, but no meat) which is under the supervision of our rabbi. All food for Narayever events must be prepared in the Narayever kitchen or in another kosher-certified facility.
Position Overview:
The First Narayever Congregation is the first synagogue in Toronto to adopt a sustainable food initiative and we are now looking for an experienced caterer with a passion for sustainability to help us make this transition.
First Narayever Congregation is hiring a Part-Time Caterer to manage all food served in the synagogue and to help implement its new sustainable food initiative.
Responsibilities:
Specific responsibilities of the Caterer would include:
- Work closely with volunteer committee to create an annual food plan
- Develop menus based around locally available produce
- Shop, prepare, serve and clean up for all events
- Organize and run an efficient and sustainable kitchen
- Ensure adherence to sanitary and safe food handing legislation and guidelines at all times
- Develop sourcing relationships with local farmers and suppliers, including our CSA farm (Everdale)
- Assist the congregation in developing cost-effective strategies for making the shift to a sustainable kitchen
- On-site approximately 2 1/2 days per week, depending on calendar
Qualifications:
Skills and Experience:
- Experienced caterer accustomed to managing groups of up to 200 people
- Culinary creativity
- Passion for sustainability
- Experience sourcing directly from farmers and cooking seasonally
- Ability to cook creatively on a limited budget
- Strong interpersonal, administrative, and managerial skills
- Experience with kashrut a plus, but not essential (we will teach you!)
