Description

Since opening our doors in 1971, Evergreen has established a national reputation for leadership in developing innovative interdisciplinary, collaborative and team-taught academic programs. We have a vibrant undergraduate program, a graduate program, and seven public service centers that constitute a unique academic setting.

Evergreen has been a leader in environmental education from the beginning. In recent years, we have stepped up our commitment to sustainability to reach beyond the classroom and even the campus.

Evergreen values a student-centered learning environment, a link between theory and practice, and a multicultural community of diverse faculty, students and staff working together. Current enrollment is approximately 4,400.

Position Overview:

The Evergreen State College seeks a broadly capable designer, artist or design-oriented engineer to teach sustainable design in a setting of team-taught, interdisciplinary programs which evolve from year to year, and are full time for both faculty and students.

A strong candidate will have a record of creative practical experience, demonstrated commitment and ability in teaching sustainable design/construction or environmental art forms, the capacity to bridge between these fields and environmental studies, and understanding and ability to address community and environmental justice in relation to sustainability.

Opportunities exist locally for collaboration with community organizations. Evergreen encourages student, campus and community engagement in creating, designing and building in sustainable ways, and welcomes a candidate who is prepared to take a leadership role in such efforts.

Responsibilities:

S/he should be prepared to lead an undergraduate design studio, and to teach sustainable design as a rigorous and creative investigative and problem solving process employing a suitable mix of fieldwork, research, analysis, graphic visualization and modeling, hands-on construction, communication, and writing skills.

Qualifications:

The candidate's field might be architecture, landscape architecture; construction technologies; engineering; land-use, transportation, energy, or resource systems design; restoration and preservation of natural and built environments; industrial or product design; public art; or environmental art and sculpture. S/he should be grounded in the history, theory, and practice of design in environmental and social contexts, and be knowledgeable in the applied sciences relative to his or her specialty area.

This is a full time Regular Faculty position, eligible for continuing appointment after 2, 3-year renewable contracts. All requirements for this position must be completed by the end of academic year 2009-10. Review of complete applications begins January 4, 2010 and will continue until finalists are selected.
