A Better City (ABC) is a nonprofit membership organization that provides the business and institutional leadership essential for ensuring progress and tangible results on transportation, land development, and environmental investments that are vital to sustaining and improving the Boston area's economy and quality of life.

Position Overview:

This grant funded position provides an opportunity for an individual to assist in the management and programming of the Challenge for Sustainability, a nation leading green business engagement program managed by A Better City. 

In this position you will work directly with businesses and buildings to measure and report on their environmental impacts and provide assistance and guidance in their efforts to increase their sustainability with a focus in the areas of energy efficiency, waste reduction, and transportation.

You will work closely with program staff in overseeing overall program growth and development. This position will also require an individual to plan and coordinate special events and educational workshops for participants. This position reports directly to ABC's Director of Transportation Demand Management & Sustainability and will be expected to assist the organization's Transportation Management Association when needed.

We have a convenient downtown Boston location.  

Responsibilities: 

  • Ensure program success by effectively working with and leading business representatives, facility managers, sustainability coordinators, human resources, information technology, coordinators to establish and accomplish their Challenge goals.
  • Conduct outreach and promotional activities to recruit businesses into the Challenge.
  • Compile, analyze, and monitor data submitted by participants
  • Track implementation of sustainability initiatives and plans by Challenge participants.
  • Establish and maintain communications with Challenge participants, strategic partners, and public agencies.
  • Collaborate regularly with fellow Coordinator to maintain consistency and coordinate activities.
  • Help strategize new initiatives and services.
  • Assist with meetings, research, reports, white papers, and resources on sustainability and climate change.
  • Develop, plan, and implement sustainability events, information sessions and workshops.
  • Participate in and/or represent ABC at various functions and meetings.
  • Maintain current working knowledge of administrative systems, equipment, procedures and processes used by ABC.
  • Maintain ongoing correspondence and provide leadership for member sustainability coordinators.
  • Participate, assist, and support ABC events, meetings, activities, and staff when needed. 

Qualifications: 

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal voluntary environmental programs.
  • Must be enthusiastic, customer service orientated and willing to perform a variety of tasks.
  • Well-organized, efficient and able to coordinate several on-going projects.
  • Able to monitor and assume responsibility for high quality work.
  • Able to work independently on long-term projects with minimal daily supervision.
  • Knowledge of Dreamweaver, Twitter, Facebook.
  • Strong communication skills. 

Experience/Education

  • Bachelor's Degree or experience in the fields of sustainability, transportation, or environment.
  • LEED AP desirable.
