Description
The George Washington University (GW) seeks a qualified individual to manage projects and systems that will contribute to a sustainable and healthy campus. The goal is to implement projects that will improve the University's impact on climate change, water availability, and ecosystems in an urban setting, with the intent to enhance social equity and economic prosperity. Projects may have educational components for students, staff, and faculty.
Responsibilities:
Provides input to the University's sustainability vision and strategy based on current technology and policy related to implementation projects; provides guidance on best and next practice for projects in higher education and private sector; and monitors pending regulations and other forms of governance that may affect implementation of GW sustainability projects in positive and/or negative ways.
Supports the roll out of the GW Revolving Sustainability Fund by giving input to project selection parameters and then shepherding project evaluation and implementation. Manages the development of GW's Climate Action Plan (CAP) by facilitating a multi-stakeholder business planning process for carbon neutrality with the GW community. Works with Director to design formal process and works closely with Facilities Planning and Environmental Management Team on process and delivery of CAP.
Assists departments in the development of their portion of the CAP and accompanying climate policy using data on best practices from peer universities in designing approach and final business plan. Analyzes the financial viability of proposed projects and investigates practical financing options with input from GW finance, budget, development, and other offices with fiscal responsibility at both the University and School level.
Evaluates best implementation projects for GW based on strengths of the University, current system constraints, and appetite for change. Facilitates implementation of projects with vendors and various teams around campus in a way that promotes collaboration and credibility. Supports Sustainability team in tracking progress to reach long-term goals. Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and 3 years of appropriate experience.
In addition to having a passion for sustainable development and wanting to work in the Office of Sustainability, the successful candidate will have excellent writing and speaking skills. A post-secondary degree in business and/or environment is desired, along with a talent for grassroots networking. A strong knowledge of the issues of climate change, renewable energy, and project finance is important.
S/he will be highly motivated and self-directed, comfortable working in a loosely structured environment both independently and as part of a team, willing and able to assume a high level of responsibility for a project from start to finish, show initiative to seize and develop new opportunities.
