Position Overview
The Sustainability Coordinator position is an exciting opportunity to coordinate Benton County's newly expanded role in community sustainability and resilience. Plan, coordinate and implement sustainable practices within the Benton County organization, and County sustainability efforts affecting communities throughout the county.
Work is under guidance of an internal-focus committee, and an external-focus committee. The program goal is to enable current and future generations to simultaneously meet environmental, economic, and societal needs.
Responsibilities
Community Sustainability Essential Duties - Under guidance of the Sustainable Communities & Policy Committee:
- Refine and update the County's Community Sustainability Plan, through periodic evaluation of community sustainability needs, gaps, and opportunities.
- Identify sustainability-related community goals, using various existing documents and additional public input.
- Help to identify ways the County can contribute to meeting community sustainability goals; coordinate with County staff to develop action plans to meet community goals.
- Collaborate and coordinate with other agencies/organizations to promote region-wide solutions.
- Develop process for considering sustainability in all County decisions, program development, funding decisions, and priorities; develop criteria and work with County staff to evaluate future decisions and audit existing programs and policies.
- Identify opportunities to share information with the public; conduct education and engagement, focused on rural areas and communities that currently lack formal engagement in sustainability.
- Establish network of volunteers or community liaisons for information sharing and coordination of sustainability events/activities.
- Update and maintain the external sustainability website, providing resources to the public and informing about ongoing sustainability projects.
Sustainability in Internal County Operations Essential Duties:
- Work with County Sustainability committee to establish a prioritized work plan and implement the work plan.
- Secure internal and external resources (i.e. technical support, materials, equipment, and funding) including collaborating with organizational staff to make use of experience and expertise.
- Facilitate monthly committee meetings with an emphasis on proposed objectives and goals.
- Complete and present annual sustainability report, including the measure or evaluation of sustainability achievements (metrics).
- Coordinate the activities of a sustainability intern to track and input County's usage of electricity, waste, and natural gas; Analyze, interpret and report on results.
- Update and maintain the County's internal sustainability website to provide resources for staff and information about ongoing sustainability projects.
Benton County Fair Green Team/Vendor Program and Liaison
Essential Duties:
- Coordinate with all past food vendors to secure approved compostable materials.
- Secure, train, and manage volunteers.
- Work closely with waste franchise (i.e. Republic Services).
- Work with fairgrounds staff to gain volunteer support and expand the scope and impact of the programs.
- Actively seek out and sustain partnerships with local and regional organizations including but not limited to: Corvallis Sustainability Coalition, Clean Energy Works of Oregon, City of Corvallis, OSU, Republic Services, Benton County Fairgrounds, Energy Trust of Oregon, and Solar Co-Ops.
Qualifications
Minimum:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- 2 years of progressively responsible professional experience, in sustainability, environmental science, or other field related to the position duties.
- This position requires a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
Preferred:
- Master's degree in sustainability, environmental science or other field related to the position duties, preferred.
- The ideal candidate will have experience with project management, public engagement, sustainability education/outreach, public policy analysis, maintaining a website.
- Ability to work effectively with varied groups and individuals, inside and outside of the organization. Ability and interest in undertaking widely ranging tasks.
- Frequently sitting for long periods of time.
- Often walking in both indoor and outdoor environments and in inclement weather.
- Occasionally standing for long periods of time.
- Frequent use of computer keyboard, mouse, monitor, and other related hardware.
- Frequently reaching, grasping, and data entry with fingers and hands (repetitive motion).
- Frequently talking on the phone or in person with public. Occasionally lifting materials and supplies up to 40 lbs. Frequently talking, reading, and listening.
Compensation: Salary is $4,286.53 - $5,357.73 per month.
