Description
The City of Baltimore is seeking an energetic and knowledgeable Sustainability Coordinator to help establish and staff the newly created Office of Sustainability, whose mission is to develop and implement a City-wide Sustainability Plan and Program.
Baltimore was ranked the 11th most sustainable city by SustainLane in 2007 and opportunities abound to further develop and expand the City's "Green Agenda." With strong support from the Mayor's Office, the new coordinator will work with the Baltimore Sustainability Commission, City agencies and new partners to organize sustainable programming and introduce new initiatives.
Specific Duties:
* Establish a permanent Sustainability Program that grows and improves over time.
* Support the activities of an internal City Environmental Sub-Cabinet to develop best practices and track implementation of the Sustainability Program.
* Assist with the development of a green building program, and improve environmental sensitivity and sustainability of development and other private sector activities.
* Serve as lead author, and manage production of annual sustainability report.
* Work closely with public relations staff to communicate the City's sustainability goals and accomplishments.
* Pursue grants and other funding, recognition/awards, where appropriate.
* Ensure that City activities complement related initiatives by other organizations. Evaluate the applicability and appropriateness of City participation in International, State, or Regional sustainability initiatives.
* Develop programs to encourage citizen adoption of sustainability practices and changes in behavior.
Desired Qualifications:
* A master's degree in environmental or urban planning, or a closely related field, from an accredited college or university
* Four years of experience in performing urban, regional or planning work. Applicant may substitute a bachelor's degree in environmental or urban planning from an accredited college or university and five years of experience in performing urban, regional or transportation planning work.
* Advanced knowledge and progressively responsible work involving policy analysis, environmental planning, and project management.
* Demonstrated ability to lead work groups and manage complex, interdisciplinary projects and partnerships across organizational lines.
* Excellent writing skills with experience writing reports, results of analysis and presentations.
* Experience speaking in public and managing public meetings.
Salary: $50,000 - $65,700* (Contractual)
