Background Information:

The Center for a New American Dream helps Americans consume responsibly to protect the environment, enhance quality of life and promote social justice. We work with individuals, institutions, communities and businesses to conserve natural resources, counter the commercialization of our culture and promote positive changes in the way goods are produced and consumed. In 2005, Washingtonian Magazine named Center for a New American Dream one of the top 50 places to work in DC. 

Timeframe: This position will run approximately from May to August (or June to September depending on applicant's schedule). Ideal availability would be 3-4 days per weeks (excluding Fridays). 

Compensation: While this is an unpaid position, interns will be reimbursed for commuting via public transportation and receive a $10 per diem (prorated for partial days). (There may also be an opportunity for reduced or free housing; if interested in this note it in your cover letter.) 

Description: The development internship offers an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual to work closely with accomplished fundraising professionals in a highly successful national non-profit with an annual budget of $2 million. Fundraising is an integral part of all non-profit organizations - come learn techniques and strategies from a well-established department of professionals.

The development intern's responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

* Conducting research on foundations and major donor prospects;
* Drafting development materials;
* Corresponding with individual and institutional donors, including writing and sending thank you letters;
* Assisting monthly donor, in-kind, workplace, and matching gift programs, including soliciting reputable companies for in-kind donations; and
* Helping with general administrative work (approximately 25% of time) and other tasks as requested. 

The ideal candidate will be a good writer who is independent, detail-oriented, and capable of taking initiative on specific projects. Successful applicants will also have a sense of humor and subscribe to our philosophy of "more fun, less stuff." Applicants from all educational backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Experience working with databases and the Microsoft Office suite of programs a plus, but not required.
