Description

The Center for Biological Diversity, a national organization dedicated to protecting endangered species and wild places of North America and the Pacific through science, policy, education, and environmental law, is seeking a highly motivated staff attorney to work in our Tucson, Arizona headquarters.

Requirements for the position include a demonstrated commitment to environmental protection, excellent research and writing skills, strong oral advocacy and public speaking skills, familiarity with administrative law and procedure, knowledge of public lands and endangered species issues, and a strong work ethic. Civil litigation experience preferred.

Responsibilities of the position include participation in all facets of federal and state administrative advocacy, including writing comments and appeals, representing CBD at public meetings and hearings, developing coalitions, and conducting media outreach. The attorney will also be responsible for developing, managing, and litigating cases in federal and state forums.

This position will focus on the protection of Arizona?s desert environment. The Center?s desert program encompasses a wide array of environmental issues and challenges involving the preservation of native species and their habitats. Some of these issues include filing appeals of projects on public lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management, monitoring and challenging Army Corps of Engineers permitting of private land residential development, protecting private and public lands from rampant development of power plants, electric transmission lines, oil and gas drilling, and other energy development projects, challenging any proposed incursions on Forest Service and BLM roadless and designated Wilderness areas, and ensuring that Arizona?s five newly designated National Monuments are provided with full conservation protection.

Salary for the Staff Attorney position is competitive with other non-profit environmental organizations. The Center offers an excellent vacation and benefits package.
