The Development Internship offers an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual to work closely with accomplished fundraising professionals in a highly successful national non-profit with an annual budget of close to $2 million.
The development intern's responsibilities will include:
* Maintaining relations with individual and institutional donors, including writing and sending thank you letters and appropriate membership materials and updating New American Dream's member database;
* Conducting research on foundations and major donor prospects as instructed by the development team staff;
* Drafting development materials;
* Tracking news articles that mention New American Dream for use in grant applications and general correspondence to funders;
* Assisting with monthly donor, in-kind, workplace, and matching gift programs, including soliciting reputable companies for in-kind donations; and
* Helping with general administrative work (approximately 25% of time) and other tasks as requested.
The ideal candidate will be an excellent writer who is extremely detail-oriented, reliable, and capable of taking initiative on specific projects. Successful applicants will also have a sense of humor and subscribe to our philosophy of "more fun, less stuff." Applicants who have an interest in fundraising as a potential career are preferred, though not required. Experience and/or the computer skills needed to learn and work with a database are also desired.
Timeframe: This is a 3-6 month unpaid position beginning April 2006, ideally for 2-4 days (or equivalent) per week. Longer commitments are preferred.
Compensation: While this is an unpaid position, interns will be reimbursed for commuting via public transportation and receive a $10 per diem (prorated for partial days). (There may also be an opportunity for reduced or free housing; contact us for further details). New American Dream also practices a 4-day, 32-hour workweek (Monday-Thursday).
