Description

The Green Timbers Heritage Society is hiring two Environmental Outreach Team Members for the Surrey Natural Areas Partnership (SNAP) summer program. The SNAP program is a unique partnership involving 3 local non-profit groups and Surrey Parks, Recreation & Culture. The goal of the program is to restore and enhance Surrey's natural area parks and to increase awareness and stewardship of these areas.

Position Overview: 

The Environmental Outreach Team Members will work under the direction of their Coordinator to deliver environmental outreach to communities in Surrey, and participate in community events.

Responsibilities:

  • Door-to-door distribution of environmental and park related information
  • Host and attend special events such as environmental stewardship events (such as invasive plant removals) and community festivals
  • Lead programs and interpretive walks for children, youth and adults
  • Communicate with the public and park neighbours
  • Possibly assist on occasion with SNAP's Eco Ranger program, and with SNAP's Environmental Education and Habitat Restoration Teams 

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Enrolment in, or completion of, an undergraduate degree or 2 year diploma program in Communications, Public Relations, Education, Environmental Studies, Resource Management, or related discipline
  • Strong public relations and interpersonal skills
  • Experience working with the public and/or children
  • Creativity, enthusiasm and some interest in ecology and the environment
  • Valid BC Driver's License & access to personal vehicle (mileage expenses reimbursed)
  • Valid Level 1 First Aid Certification will be required as a condition of employment
  • Completion of a criminal record check will be required as a condition of employment

Preferred:

  • Fluency in additional languages is an asset (eg. Punjabi)

As these positions are dependent on external funding, all applicants must indicate if they meet the following criteria:

  • Required to be current students returning to full-time studies in September
  • Between the ages of 15 and 30.

Compensation: Rate of Pay: $15.50/hr

Term: May 4th to August 28th, 2009
Hours: 35 hrs/week, Tues-Sat (11:30 am to 7:00 pm daily with some flexibility required)
