Description
Westwind is a premier outdoor education camp, retreat facility, and wildlife sanctuary situated on the Oregon Coast. Westwind's facilities include a historic lodge, a learning center, 15 rustic cabins, a 10-acre farm, a two-mile emergency access road and over 400 acres of largely wild land.
The nonprofit Westwind Stewardship Group (WSG) was created in 2004, and in 2006 acquired the Westwind site in order to provide long-term stewardship to this sensitive ecosystem. WSG's mission is to serve the people of Oregon and the Northwest by conserving the 529 acre Westwind ecosystem, providing place-based educational experiences, inspiring more balanced and sustainable living, and nurturing solitude and individual connection to the natural world.
Position Overview:
Reporting to the Executive Director, The Site Manager will work in close collaboration with an existing Site Manager in maintaining Westwind's site and facilities, and supporting user groups. Responsibilities include:
- Greet, transport and assist site users of all ages and capabilities as needed.
- Perform daily, regular, seasonal and long-term building, custodial, site and equipment maintenance at Westwind to ensure the safety of campers, user groups and staff.
- Promote and support WSG mission of conservation, education and sustainability in all contacts with site users and the local community, and in daily work.
Responsibilities:
- Perform maintenance activities of facility and equipment in accordance with budget plan, Westwind guidelines and health and safety standards.
- Perform tasks relating to user groups' use of site (i.e. river crossing, safety orientation, check-out, etc.).
- Provide a welcoming and hospitable atmosphere for user group participants, summer campers, employees and volunteers.
- Oversee site maintenance and project related functions of volunteers and any temporary employees.
- Promote and support WSG mission in all contacts and orientations with site users and the local community.
- Monitor and maintain electrical, water, transportation, communication, emergency and septic systems and documentation in accordance with health and safety codes, American Camp Association standards and the Westwind guidelines.
- Perform routine maintenance on all vehicles, motors, etc. to ensure reliability of the site's transportation systems. Maintain vehicle logs for all vehicles.
- Train Westwind staff on safe and appropriate use of tractors, barges, chainsaws and other heavy equipment as needed and appropriate.
- Share schedule of 24-hour availability on-call for guest support and emergency response.
Qualifications:
Site Manager must have:
- Excellent interpersonal skills and enjoy working with and around people of diverse ages, backgrounds, interests, and skills.
- Excellent physical conditioning. Ability to lift 80 lbs., dig, load, repair, clean, walk considerable distances through sandy, steep and rough terrain, etc.
- Ability to drive a boat and tractor and use heavy equipment and tools including a chain saw, brush cutter and carpentry shop equipment.
- Position requires periods of 24 hour on-call duty. On-site housing may be available, and Site Manager may be required to live on site.
Required:
- Certification in CPR and first aid.
- Oregon Boater Education card. (A USCG Inland Water or 25 Ton Master License is desirable but not required).
- Demonstrated success in facility maintenance/management.
- Good driving record.
- Demonstrated knowledge and abilities in vehicle and boat motor maintenance, electrical work, carpentry and plumbing.
- Must be able to pass mandatory criminal background check.
- Comfortable with word processing and e-mail communications
- Highly organized and able to work independently.
- Creative trouble shooter.
Desirable:
- Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Love of rugged outdoor experiences.
- Interest and involvement in applied sustainability practices and conservation efforts.
Compensation: Compensation will be based on experience. Westwind offers competitive wages, and applicant may be eligible for on-site housing and other benefits.
