Position Overview

Save the Redwoods League is seeking a Sierra Stewardship and Restoration Manager. You would be responsible for providing the primary support for restoration planning and implementation in the giant sequoia range. The core duties will include ecological restoration and fuels reduction project design and implementation as well as coordination of all elements of stewardship on League-held lands in the giant sequoia range.

The Sierra Stewardship and Restoration Manager will also provide support in the advancement of the Giant Sequoia Working Group (GSWG) and further develop relationships with agency partners to increase the pace and scale of restoration treatments throughout the range. This is a five-year term position with potential to extend, as determined by the ongoing role of the League in planning and implementation of restoration projects in the region.

Essential Duties

Plan and Implement Forest Restoration Projects:

  • Collaborates with Director of Restoration; develops target conditions and designs data gathering efforts to identify restoration needs
  • Designs and plans restoration projects; drafts scope-of-work and budget documents
  • Coordinates with Director of Government Affairs and Public Funding; identifies public funding opportunities and collaborates on funding applications
  • Initiates and manages contracts to accomplish restoration work
  • Coordinates with contractors to complete required compliance and permitting
  • Provides on-site oversight/monitoring of active restoration activities by contractors
  • Designs and coordinates data collection for vegetation and fuels monitoring in relation to restoration projects

Landscape-scale Restoration Projects:

  • Convenes partners to advance GSWG identified goals; produces white papers and collation of giant sequoia spatial data and research from all management units
  • With the support of the Giant Sequoia Forest Fellow, coordinates GSWG meetings and subcommittee meetings; helps subcommittees by task and timeline management
  • Uses the GSWG platform to advance landscape-scale restoration projects with agency partners

On-site Property Management:  

  • Acts as the League’s Sierra representative in the community and with local partners
  • Coordinates access for varied parties, including contractors, donors and other League guests, researchers; occasionally leads field tours
  • Interfaces with the local community and manages property access
  • Oversees contractors performing property maintenance and public access improvements
  • Coordinates with Director of Parks and Public Engagement on public access improvements
  • Maintains gates and signage; monitors boundaries and property for appropriate use; monitors trails and roads for repair needs

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in forestry, conservation biology, or related field, advanced degree preferred, or equivalent experience
  • Five years’ experience with restoration forestry and project management
  • Proficient user of Microsoft Office computer programs and GIS software
  • Knowledge of Sierra Nevada natural history and ecology
  • Understanding of federal, California state and/or local environmental regulatory frameworks is desirable
  • Cultural competency and ability to communicate and interact effectively with people across cultures, ethnic groups, and identities
  • Understanding of California tribes, tribal relations, tribal issues and application of traditional ecological knowledge specific to the Sierra Nevada is desirable
  • Commitment to the League’s pragmatic, non-confrontational approach to conservation
  • Self-starter, able to work independently as well as in a team, with a track record of collaborating successfully with others
  • Highly organized with excellent project management skills, including the ability to establish and monitor priorities, maintain flexibility, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced setting; able to handle multiple complex tasks with stringent time constraints
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to conservation
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Personable with a good sense of humor is a plus

Working Conditions:                           

  • Work will be performed in remote locations with frequent overnight travel, predominantly within the Sierra Nevada, California
  • Required to hike through forest land while working off-site; walk on uneven ground, climb over obstacles, and access remote locations
  • Some weekend and evening responsibilities
  • Valid driver’s license and safe driving record
  • Regularly sits at a desk or workstation
  • Actively utilizes computers, telephones and other office equipment
  • Frequently moves about and between offices to collaborate with colleagues
  • Able to lift, carry, move and position objects weighing up to 30 pounds
