~ The Sierra Nevada Alliance has been protecting and restoring Sierra land, water, wildlife and communities since 1993 ~
The Alliance unites hundreds of individuals and groups behind a common goal of protecting and restoring the natural values of the Sierra Nevada for future generations while promoting sustainable communities.
Position Overview
We are seeking enthusiastic, conservation-minded people to devote a year of service to protect natural resources and sustainable communities in the Sierra. During your year of service, you will receive skills and technical training, mentorship with outstanding environmental leaders and receive an education award upon successful completion of service.
Placement Locations: AmeriCorps Members will be placed with an environmental organization or agency in the Sierra region. Members will be based in iconic Sierra locations like South Lake Tahoe, Bishop, Nevada City and other special Sierra places.
Training begins: November 1, 2014 - and applications are due by August 1, 2014.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities & Projects will include:
- Watershed restoration and assessment;
- Environmental education; and
- Volunteer recruitment and support;
- Members may spend their time monitoring stream flow;
- Removing invasive species;
- Leading field trips;
- Organizing volunteer appreciation days:
- Replanting native species;
- Teaching elementary science classes about the water cycle,
- Coordinating highway litter pick ups;
- Building trails
- Attending GIS classes; and
- Participating in a wide variety of other activities.
Compensation: A living allowance and health care benefits are provided during your service term, as well as an end of service education award and loan forbearance.
