Founded by David Early in 1995, Design, Community & Environment (DC&E) provides a comprehensive range of planning and design services in comprehensive planning, urban design, landscape architecture, transportation and bicycle planning, and environmental review, all with an emphasis on smart growth.  We believe that responsible planning and design reflect the communities they serve and work in concert with the natural environment. 

Position Overview:

Design, Community & Environment is seeking applicants for a senior-level, principal-track manager to oversee work in Comprehensive Planning. The selected candidate will report directly to the firm's president as one of ten senior staff members overseeing each of the firm's six professional disciplines. 

Responsibilities: 

While other managers oversee work in landscape architecture, urban design, transportation planning, transfer of development rights and environmental review, this senior manager will oversee work in general plans, zoning, planning implementation, specific plans and public participation. 

Total project volume to be managed is approximately $2.5 million per year, with approximately 15 direct and indirect staff reports.  Projects to be managed are in Northern and Southern California. This position can be based in either Berkeley or Ventura.

Applicants for this position should have extensive experience in the management of a range of comprehensive planning projects.  Specific activities include: 

  • Staff assignments and oversight
  • Work with project managers to provide direction and guidance
  • Formulate technical processes and approach
  • Schedule and budget adherence
  • Subconsultant coordination and management
  • Quality control and quality assurance
  • Client contact
  • Public presentations
  • Meeting facilitation  
  • Oversight of proposal and report writing
  • Strategic planning
  • Coordination of marketing and expansion efforts
