Description

Alion Science and Technology delivers scientific, engineering, IT and operational solutions for problems relating to national defense, homeland security, energy and the environment.

Responsibilities: 

  • As the organizational expert, serves as the technical specialist for the organization in the application of complex and advanced engineering theories, concepts, principles, and processes in the area of conventional energy. Recognized within the technical community as an authority in conventional energy disciplines. Typically publishes professional and scientific papers and patents.
  • Provides analysis and assessments expertise as a subject matter expert (SME) to technical projects under development, acting as a recognized authority in conventional energy.
  • Carries out experiments/research of a complex and advanced nature and directs the research, testing and analysis activities. Makes independent decisions on technical problems and solution methods.
  • Stays abreast of developments in field of expertise. Documents scientific topics. May author scientific reports.
  • Report directly to Alion Program Manager on Program progress and issues.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness and accuracy of theories and postulations.
  • Keeps abreast of new scientific methods affecting area of responsibility.
  • Provides assurance that technical projects are performed in a technically proficient manner and ensures conclusions and recommendations are supported by the analyses presented.
  • Develops and provides final technical review of major technical reports, status reports, letters, technical memoranda, contract reports and formal briefings.
  • Prepares and provides formal briefings to staff and customers, as needed.
  • Leads technical discussions at project review sessions and in negotiations with customers.
  • Interacts with the sponsor, government officials and recognized experts in scientific field.
  • Serves as program team lead. Assists in prioritizing issues, plans approach, and works with Program Managers to develop schedules and staffing plans to support program delivery milestones.
  • Contributes original ideas and innovations to both solicited and unsolicited proposals that result in the expansion of ongoing programs or new program starts. Develops related briefings and provides understandable and compelling presentations of technical ideas/proposals.

Qualifications: 

  • BS or Masters degree in Engineering or Scientific discipline and 20 plus years relevant work experience in managing, developing or engineering Energy Conservation practices or methodology. Doctoral degree preferred but not required.
  • In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for more than 20 years of applicable work experience. Work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience for positions involving new technology or labor market shortages as reflected by market survey data.
  • Extensive experience in research and experimental techniques.
  • Expert knowledge of engineering principles, theories, and established methodologies sufficient to perform the full range of duties involved in conducting research projects.
  • Excellent customer and organizational level communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to think critically.
  • A security clearance of an appropriate level may be required after employment.
