Position Overview:

The Senior Power Electronics Engineer responsibilities include; evaluation of photovoltaic power electronics components for the integration into pre-engineered photovoltaic system offerings, testing of prototype photovoltaic systems, and troubleshooting of field issues. 

The successful candidate must be capable of understanding multiple approaches and technologies for reliably converting photovoltaic Direct Current power to Alternating Current power.  A strong background and experience in photovoltaic system design, power electronics reliability testing, and photovoltaic system codes and standards is needed. 

The successful candidate must possess a thorough understanding of photovoltaic system designs, multiple power electronics technologies, approaches for appropriate power electronics technology selection, as well as PV codes and standards.  A strong background and experience in PV system design and technical/economic analysis is needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the power electronics subject matter expert for the solar solutions team.
  • Stay abreast of current power electronics market trends, applications, technologies, and codes and standards development.
  • Continuously build knowledge of key customers, their business - products, technologies, applications, competitors, codes & standards, etc. - what is necessary for the customer to be successful, and the value that our current and future products deliver to the customer in solving their problems.
  • Document and communicate customer specifications and Fitness for Use criteria with input and direction from the Market Development Manager, Product Manager and Sales team.
  • Provide technical expertise to assist with cost take out or product enhancements
  • Lead communications on how products are made, used, bring benefits and troubleshoot typical issues and questions
  • Translate customers FFU into products, specifications and procedures
  • Understand competitive threats through active collection and analysis of competitive products
  • Drive product line enhancements and developments based on understanding trends
  • Implement appropriate testing/standards to meet quality and consistency requirements of our customers
  • Partner with 3rd party manufacturers to complete product manufacturing pursuant to customer FFUs
  • Implement and follow process changes with regards to OC's supply chain, customer service, and production requirements
  • Work with Product Stewardship team to identify and address issues
  • Lead projects from concept through to commercialization, for large cross-functional teams, and ensuring consistent alignment with the business strategy throughout the project. Projects to be managed through the use of the Solution Development Stage Gate process.
  • Provide innovative solutions and solve problems through engineering and scientific fundamentals.
  • Demonstrate the ability to develop and meet key milestones, to work and communicate effectively with people at all levels within the organization, and to technically lead the development of solutions.
  • Develop specifications and recruit consultants or contract firms to ensure that project timelines are met.

Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering
  • NABCEP certification preferred
  • 3 years experience in the photovoltaic industry
  • Candidate should be experienced in performing both technical and economic analysis of photovoltaic inverter selection in PV system design.
  • Candidate must possess photovoltaic system design knowledge and experience, capable of appropriately sizing power electronics equipment to photovoltaic modules.
  • Candidate should have a thorough understanding of the component level operation of the power electronics hardware and software including but not limited to; photovoltaic inverter component reliability, Maximum Power Point Tracking, Pulse Width Modulation, common inverter failure modes, etc.
  • Ideal candidate should have a working knowledge of the proper application and use of central, string, and micro inverters as well as the benefits and drawbacks of each system design.
  • Previous experience with photovoltaic inverter end product testing is desired, specifically to UL1741.
  • Previous experience with troubleshooting PV field issues is desired including; inverter failure, module failure, underperforming PV systems, ground fault detection, and system commissioning.
  • The candidate should posses the skills to manage subcontractors and the deliverables of subcontractors against specific tasks. Must be comfortable writing specifications and proposals for contractors to execute against.
  • Familiar with National Electric Code requirements.

Must be eligible to work in the U.S. on a permanent basis.
