Department Overview:
PG&E's Power Generation Department manages and operates the largest privately-owned hydroelectric system in the nation. These renewable electric generation resources, located mostly at high elevation in California's Sierra Nevada and southern Cascade mountains include 68 powerhouses, 184 miles of canals, 41 miles of flumes, 135 miles of tunnels, 19 miles of penstock pipes, 99 reservoirs, and 142,000 acres of watershed lands - all covered by 26 operating licenses issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
Position Overview
This position will provide overall leadership for all aspects of the Shasta hydroelectric system including supervising, managing, and directing the operations and maintenance team to ensure that goals are met, operational excellence is achieved and maintained, and a healthy culture is maintained that is consistent with PG&E's values.
There are 16 powerhouses totaling 810MW of generating capacity in these systems. Physical requirements include inspecting and driving in mountainous areas in all seasons, walking on unpaved areas, and climbing stairs and ladders in powerhouses and the ability to work in severe weather conditions including heavy rains and snow.
Travel at least 30% of the time with occasional overnight stays. Willing to work overtime on weekdays, weekend, and holidays as needed. Your primary residence should be within one hour travel time from the watershed headquarters in Burney, CA.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for all aspects of facility safety program to assure employees, contractors, and visitors are injury and illness free and that public safety is ensured.
- Ensure the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan (IIPP) is implemented and that safety is the number one priority for employees and contractors.
- Create an environment where employees exhibit safe work behaviors.
- Direct system operation and maintenance in compliance with company policies and procedures and assures system is in full compliance with all local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
- Participate and/or leads in the development of company and area policies and procedures pertaining to operations.
- Ensure that the necessary processes are in place for superior productivity, reliability, and efficiency improvements.
- Develop short and long range plans for operations and maintenance, capital improvements, equipment availability, and staffing needs.
- Establish and maintain relationships with regulatory agencies, local officials, and local industrial leaders, and inform the appropriate persons of any actions, plans, or proposals that may have a bearing on system operations and activities.
- Keep the energy procurement organization informed about system availability, cost, and related matters.
- Ensure employee training and qualification program is implemented for safety, environmental, and personnel development to produce a workforce that is motivated, flexible, technically astute, and consistent with company culture and values.
- Ensure the development and effective utilization of employees through job assignments, training programs, and personal development plans.
- Administer an effective job performance review program consistent with company guidelines. Interview, hire, and train employees.
- Plan, assign, and direct work.
- Appraise employee performance and reward and discipline employees.
- Address concerns and resolve problems.
- Proactively manage labor-management issues.
Qualifications
Minimum:
- 8 years electric utility or electric generation facility (power plant), with at least 5+ years of supervisory experience.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent amount of experience.
Desired:
- Demonstrated leadership skills in hydroelectric powerhouses.
- Experience maintaining and updating O&M procedures for a hydroelectric powerhouse.
- Experience in high-level troubleshooting of power generation systems.
- Experience with FERC, NERC, Fish and Game, Forest Service, Regional Water Quality Control Board, and other regulators.
- Experience with supervising IBEW employees.
- Proven track record driving a strong safety culture.
- Strong written and oral communication and presentation skills.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE).
