Position Summary

The Senior Environmental & Sustainability Engineer position will develop and guide company environmental and sustainability initiatives. This individual will also support corporate, divisional, and plant personnel in implementing and managing regulatory compliance programs, sustainability programs, company directives, and other tasks. Team building and leadership abilities are essential to this role.

Reports to: Sr. Director, Environmental

Responsibilities

General Description Of Job Duties 

  • Coordinate various aspects of pollution control, waste management, recycling, environmental conservation and renewable energy
  • Develop proposed project objectives and targets, and report to management on progress in attaining them
  • Keep abreast of relevant changes in environmental legislation and initiatives
  • Serve as liaison with various stakeholders such as regulatory agencies, general public, customers and suppliers
  • Devise tools and systems to monitor performance and to implement strategies
  • Evaluate and communicate environmental/sustainability performance data and reporting information to internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies
  • Participate in environmental education
  • Serve as a technical subject matter expert on environmental policies and standards to ensure regulatory applicability, with a focus in water and wastewater
  • Collaborate with management, engineers, operators, and internal and external experts in order to evaluate and address environmental problems
  • Advise facility personnel about environmental regulations, best practices, and company policies and standards
  • Assist in budget forecasts, implementation, and administration
  • Coordinate and manage environmental protection programs and projects
  • Generate and present environmental compliance training or orientation sessions
  • Develop and implement environmental strategies and action plans to drive corporate sustainable development
  • Help set organizational sustainability targets, develop plans to meet those targets, and oversee their implementation
  • Develop and implement environmental management systems, policies, and processes to continually improve the organization’s impact on the environment
  • Develop and maintain plans, requirements, protocols, permits and standard operating procedures related to compliance, environmental protection, and sustainability performance
  • Communicate and promote sustainability and environmental initiatives to internal and external stakeholders

Qualifications

Required Skills And Experience

  • Years of experience: 10+ year of progressive responsibility in environmental and sustainability
  • Current professional certification with a degree in engineering, science, or related field
  • Understanding of environmental compliance issues, relevant regulations best practices, and trends in all media, with a focus in water and wastewater
  • Proven working experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Commercial awareness and an understanding of business
  • Initiative to recognize emerging issues and proactively develop solutions using methods such as systems thinking and process management
  • Strong organization, planning and communication skills that enable you to coordinate a variety of projects, ideas and strategies
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with personnel at all levels of the organization
  • Personnel management and leadership skills necessary for building effective teams and managing conflict
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity, pinpoint problems and research smart and effective ways to deal with them
  • Capacity to think on large and small scale and be both analytical and creative with your ideas
  • Advanced MS Office skills
