Position Overview:
This position is responsible for providing primary legal support to the Development group, reporting to the General Counsel. The position will also work closely with the regulatory affairs group, to ensure consistency with regulatory and legislative strategies. The Senior Development Counsel will work as part of a team, helping to coordinate and oversee work of outside counsel, handling miscellaneous development-related legal matters personally, and helping to coordinate with other disciplines such as regulatory, finance, engineering, and procurement.
The Senior Development Counsel will also be available to support other matters handled by the Legal Department on an as-needed and as-available basis. Such matters may include such things as joint ventures, financing, regulatory, procurement, intellectual property, and miscellaneous contracting.
Responsibilities:
- Work with Development, Regulatory Affairs, and outside counsel to pursue permits effectively and successfully
- Advise Development and other groups on contract structure, formation, negotiation, interpretation, and execution
- Identify legal issues associated with Development activities, and manage them appropriately
- Support coordination of efforts between Development and other areas, including Finance, Regulatory Affairs, etc.
- Draft, structure, and negotiate contracts as required, including PPAs, transmission/interconnection, and other Development-related documents
- Support other Company legal activities as needed
Qualifications:
- JD degree
- At least 5 years of relevant experience; law firm experience is required, and a mix of law firm and in-house preferred
- Previous experience with permitting required; previous experience with energy project permitting and development preferred
- Project financing experience preferred
- Excitement about the renewable energy business
- Passion for servicing clients
- Comfort with working across time zones and in a multi-cultural environment
- Excellent sense of humor
- Willingness to take on new challenges
- Ability to remain comfortable in a constantly changing environment
- Good judgment, organizational and communication skills
- Ability to work independently as well as a member of a multi-disciplinary project team
