Description
The World Resources Institute is seeking a Capital Markets Expert to play a leading role in WRI's work in the area of environment and finance. In the last few years, WRI has emerged as one of the leading institutions providing research to the capital markets that demonstrates the links between corporations' environmental and financial performance.
WRI has pioneered methodologies that allow environmental issues to be incorporated into security analysis and portfolio management. WRI is also working to help the banking industry implement new policies and commitments on environmental issues. Through a major new initiative on Financial Flows, WRI now aims to grow its activities regarding advancing environmental understanding within the capital markets.
The position will combine responsibilities for directing and conducting WRI's research on environmental finance topics with responsibilities for communicating findings to financial and corporate audiences. The successful candidate will have the skills and existing network to raise WRI's profile among the financial community and to ensure that our findings and methodologies gain acceptance. Candidates should have a strong background in the capital markets with a demonstrated interest in, or experience with, environmental issues. Candidates should be eager to influence decision-making and behavior in the capital markets. The position is located at WRI's headquarters in Washington, DC and reports to the Program Director for the Sustainable Enterprise Program.
Major responsibilities:
Research:
- Direct and conduct research activities on the topic of environment and finance, including developing new projects, interacting with partners and other WRI programs, and supporting ongoing projects.
- Represent WRI in a new research collaboration with large institutional investors and another prominent NGO to explore the financial implications of climate change risks.
Outreach:
- Act as principal WRI contact to the capital markets, both domestically in the US and to a less extent internationally.
- Design and implement effective outreach strategies to ensure mainstream acceptance of environmentally sound investing and banking approaches.
- Communicate research findings to financial analysts, fund managers and institutional investors through participation in meetings, seminars and conferences.
- Present findings on environment and finance to media and extend WRI's network of media contacts in this area.
Management:
- General responsibilities for managing budgets and workplans for this area of work.
- Secure funding for this area of work and WRI's broader activities. This will involve working to build and maintain relationships with foundations, corporations, government and individual donors.
- Supervise one full-time Associate (and part-time research staff), with opportunity to create a larger team over time.
Other:
- Collaborate with and support other staff members in the Sustainable Enterprise Program
- Act informally as lead source of advice on finance topics to other projects across the Institute.
Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in finance, economics, business or related discipline, with a minimum of 10 years capital markets experience, preferably in equity or credit research.
- Demonstrated interest in or experience with environmental issues.
- Established network in the financial community.
- Results/outcome orientation and strong strategic planning skills.
- Experience working with external partners and collaborators.
- Strong project and people management skills.
- Desire to work in a collegial fashion as part of a team with little hierarchy.
- Proven track record of successful fundraising or mobilization of funds on a significant scale.
- Ability to communicate clearly and compellingly to a wide range of audiences both verbally and in writing.
- Analytical and/or modeling capabilities.
- Strong commitment to environment and development issues.
