The Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority is a local government agency founded in 1985. Our mission is to complement the work of other agencies protecting land in the Southern California Mountains by using our unique ability to acquire and improve parkland, afford educational opportunities, and provide access to, and stewardship for, a wide variety of public park and open space amenities.
The Outdoor Education Program at King Gillette Ranch is a residential outdoor education program that provides a safe, challenging, fun, and dynamic program for 5th and 6th graders from throughout Southern California. Outdoor Education days are typically Monday through Friday.
Position Overview:
The seasonal naturalists with the MRCA will use the California State Science Standards and established curriculum as guides in personalizing their classes. Seasonal naturalists will typically teach two 3-hour session lessons during the day (one during the morning and one in the afternoon).
Position Duration: February 13th - May 25th, 2012.
Responsibilities:
- Teaching 2-3 evening programs per week;
- Leading 4-5 meals throughout the week;
- Maintaining accurate records of incidents, injuries, and group behavior;
- Actively participating in the overall program, including operations and staff meetings;
- Assisting with student orientation, arrival, and departure;
- Alternating weekly overnight supervision of students in the dorm building;
- Maintaining positive open communication with other naturalists, camp director, and school staff when appropriate;
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualificaitons:
- BA or BS in related field;
- A minimum of 1 year teaching in a residential environmental education setting;
- Understanding of, and ability to communicate, ecological, recreational, and conservation concepts;
- Ability to effectively facilitate teambuilding activities, foster leadership skills, and cultivate positive group dynamics;
- Passion for teaching and developing positive relationships with students;
- Work is accomplished in both indoor and outdoor settings, and includes standing, walking, and hiking multiple miles, for extended periods of time;
- Must be physically fit, including the ability to hike for up to 10 miles and will be required to pass a physical examination that includes a drug test;
- Current First Aid and CPR certification;
- Knowledge of the local flora and fauna of the Santa Monica Mountains;
- Flexibility, high energy, self-motivation, and a huge commitment to teamwork;
- Ability to be a positive member of a community that will live and work together;
- Submit fingerprints to the Department of Justice via Live Scan;
- Have a record clean of violent or serious felonies as defined in California Penal Code Sections 667.5 and subdivision (c) 1192.7;
- Must be eligible to work in the United States.
Compensation: Starting salary between $325-$375/week, depending upon experience and certifications.
