Description
On the Potomac Palisades in north Arlington, Potomac Overlook offers 70 acres of peaceful woodland, trails, educational gardens, a small picnic area and a Nature Center. The Nature Center features brand new exhibits called the "Energerium", offering visitors a fun and accessible way to learn energy basics and ways they can help create sustainable energy solutions. The displays blend lessons from ecology, Earth Science, physics, chemistry and other topics in clear, understandable ways. The Nature Center also houses live animals and natural history exhibits and is the office for NVRPA's naturalist staff.
Position Overview:
Nature of Work
A seasonal naturalist performs interpretive duties, works with volunteers, and performs related program work. He or she also assists with upkeep of park grounds and the nature center. Work is under the general supervision of the Chief Naturalist (or of the Naturalist in the absence of the Chief Naturalist).
Responsibilities:
Examples of Work
- Prepares and presents programs about local human and natural history for school and public groups
- Prepares exhibits and other interpretive materials
- Provides visitor information and answers telephone inquiries
- Works with volunteers
- Helps maintain nature center, gardens, and grounds and cares for live animals
- Prepares educational materials about programs
- Assists with the planning and implementation of Junior Naturalist, Explorer, and Ranger Summer Day Camps for children age 7-16
- Performs related work (i.e., arts and crafts, photography) as skills and needs allow
Qualifications:
- At least 1 year of college education in some natural resource field (or equivalent training or experience)
- General knowledge of biology and ecology
- Knowledge of flora and fauna of Northern Virginia
- Ability to use power mowers, trimmers, and other grounds-care equipment
- Ability to work outdoors in hot conditions
- Ability to relate effectively with the public
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with co-workers
- Ability and desire to learn skills and information related to job
Duration: Mid-March - October 31, 2012
Compensation: $12.18 per hour; 40 hours per week
