Description
SCA Hudson Valley offers professional level conservation service opportunities within New York State Parks, Historic Sites and Department of Environmental Conservation and other partner sites throughout the Hudson Valley region.
Duties:
- SCA members serve at individual agency site placements and provide direct conservation service to surrounding communities.
- The service projects range from watershed protection, habitat restoration, wildlife protection, environmental education, public access and trail enhancement, archeological stewardship, and historical preservation.
SCA members make a positive impact on local communities, increase the public's awareness of natural resources and encourage individual commitment to conservation.
Qualifications:
- To be eligible you must have a college degree or equivalent including relevant coursework and/or fieldwork experience, effective communication skills, and the ability to work independently.
- Eligible applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents.
- Please note that individual positions may have additional requirements regarding related studies, experience and/or certifications.
- There is no age limit for any positions, although flexibility and a spirit of adventure are a must!
Terms:
Most positions last for 5-10 months and begin NOW through January 2004! (Shorter positions beginning late March or May/early June may also be available) All positions are full-time unless otherwise noted.
Benefits (except where otherwise noted): $160 week; housing or additional stipend for housing if not provided; free accident and health insurance and student loan deferment.

- Estuary Steward/Educator. The Long Island South Estuary Reserve located in Freeport, NY is an unparalled natural, cultural and recreational resource that provides social and economic benefits to Long Island.
Members will contribute to the implementation of recommendations called for in the Comprehensive Management Plan for the estuary. Provide outreach services relating to shore estuary education, flooding and disaster preparedness, inform communities of emergency response plans and procedures, serve as a volunteer and recruit community residents as volunteers for local emergency response agencies, conduct field investigations in areas prone to flooding and identify areas with erosion problems and possible management actions and develop educational materials for local government and civic groups.
BA/BS in natural resource management or related field. Strong public speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills, current first aid certifications. Personal transportation necessary. - NYS Department of Health- Center for Environmental Health Starting immediately. Must start by 11/1/2003 for a five month duration
- Environmental Health Field Worker. The Division of Environmental Health Protection located in Troy, NY offers a unique opportunity to provide a variety of essential functions of the Department of Health that contribute to protection of public health and disaster preparedness.
Development of improved information necessary to support GIS applications for specific environmental health and disaster preparedness needs, validating and evaluating data for a variety of critical infrastructure data sets; e.g. improve security of public drinking water systems statewide, develop and disseminate public outreach materials, serve as a volunteer and recruit community residents as volunteers for Red Cross emergency response functions.
BA/BS Environmental Studies or related field. Desired: Strong public speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills, current first aid certifications, GIS knowledge. Personal transportation necessary.
