Position Overview:
Sierra Nevada Journeys is looking for a Challenge Course Manager, who is passionate about outdoor education, leadership development and outstanding student outcomes. The position will be based out of our Grizzly Creek Ranch Campus, Portola in Northern California.
The position has responsibility for overall management of our site's entire challenge course including: training, facilitation, oversight, risk-management, maintenance, documentation and feedback to other Campus staff members. This is a 32-week seasonal position with incentives to return each year. The Challenge Course Manager reports to the Vice President of the Grizzly Creek Ranch Campus.
Responsibilities:
- Management of the Challenge Courses and Facility Support
- Train, supervise, and evaluate Campus staff, including participation and leadership during staff training.
- Work closely with any outside contracted program provider/vendor.
- Evaluate and maintain records of the challenge course skills of all Campus Faculty staff.
- Participate in weekly Challenge Course debriefs with Campus staff.
- Ensure all appropriate inspections are conducted in a timely manner.
- Correct and document, as necessary, situations that endanger the emotional or physical safety of any person.
- Support the development of an innovative educational program for the ropes/challenge course (working in conjunction with Residential Education Director & Vice President of Education)
- Act as lead rescuer for on the ropes course while helping to facilitate (in conjunction with Campus Faculty staff) all participant experiences
- Oversee all risk management related to the course, including alignment to American Camp Association, State and insurance regulations
- Ensure proper documentation on training, required certification, evaluation plans, and ropes course use.
- Support all areas of the Campus facility, including food service, maintenance, house keeping, office/administration and marketing.
- Set up and take down of challenge course each day before and after program
- Complete winterization of challenge course at close of campus.
- On call duties and responsibilities.
Qualifications:
- Certification or documented training or experience from a recognized organization or certifying body for ropes/challenge courses
- Passionate commitment to Sierra Nevada Journeys mission, vision and strategic direction
- Experience working at a residential camp facility
- Risk management and expedition trip leader mind set
- Strong ropes/challenge course experience: ideally has worked with challenge courses for 3+ years with over 1,000 hours of documented ropes course experience
- Ropes course rescue training
- Experience developing and facilitating challenge course curriculum
- Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities
- Able to take the initiative, think entrepreneurially, and work independently while managing multiple tasks in a fast-moving environment
- Experience with food service and facility support.
- Exceptional oral communication skills
- Ability to thrive in an environment characterized as fast-paced, creative, dynamic, and growing
- High energy, positive, "can-do" attitude, flexibility, teamwork, and attention to detail; high degree of initiative.
- Ideal candidate also has experience in wilderness expedition programs (including Ropes)
Compensation: This is an outstanding opportunity for a highly motivated individual to do great work at a socially progressive organization. Sierra Nevada Journeys is prepared to offer an attractive compensation package including a 32 week/year position, and financial incentives to return each year. Salary: $400-$450 weekly DOE with Room & Board.
