~ Groundwork San Diego-Chollas Creek (Groundwork) is part of the Groundwork USA network, developed in partnership with the National Park Service and the Environmental Protection Agency. ~

Our mission is to "bring about the sustained regeneration, improvement, and management of the physical environment by developing community-based partnerships which empower people, businesses, and organizations." Groundwork was organized in 2007, at the request of the City of San Diego, to engage the community in the restoration and stewardship of 32 miles of severely toxic, degraded creek and uplands in the Chollas Creek Watershed. 

Position Overview 

Groundwork San Diego-Chollas Creek is a nonprofit organization seeking a 15-hour per week Restoration Ecologist Project Manager to assist with planning, implementation, monitoring, and maintenance of habitat restoration projects in the Chollas Creek Watershed, including the Encanto-Emerald Hills-Radio Canyon Complex.

Groundwork San Diego-Chollas Creek is working with partner organizations to complete creekside arundo removal and tree planting projects, and to diversify, monitor, and maintain 35 acres of open space owned by the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Open Space Division and home to a number of plant and bird species of concern. 

This position is open until filled, with a start daye as soon as possible, and goes through June, 2015. Schedule is to be determined.  

Responsibilities 

  • The Project Manager will collaborate with the Groundwork Propagation Specialist, and will work with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, USGS, Urban Corps, and other partners on restoration site preparation, recruiting and training volunteers, data collection and entry, and project management.
  • The Project Manager will develop a monitoring program to document existing conditions at all restoration sites, and to record changes to include plant survivability rates, plant growth/recruitment, and plant coverage for long-term evaluation and planning. 

Qualifications  

Skills and Experience: 

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience that demonstrates project management ability is mandatory.
  • A graduate degree in restoration, plant ecology, or biology is required.

Expertise in some of the following key areas is strongly desired: 

  • project management
  • habitat restoration design
  • plant/wildlife ecology
  • wetland/riparian hydrology
  • environmental regulatory processes; statistical design and analysis
  • GPS data collection and GIS data management
  • technical report writing ability and good communication skills 

Compensation: Hourly rate (no benefits) is $17 per hour.
