Position Overview
Huron Pines is seeking a Restoration Ecologist to manage restoration activities within the Huron Pines service area in Northeast Lower Michigan. This full-time position in Gaylord offers a great work environment and the opportunity to positively impact the Great Lakes ecosystem.
Responsibilities
- This position helps to identify and prioritize projects, provide technical assistance to staff and partners and implement on-the-ground projects that help to conserve natural resources.
- Such projects include replacing poor road/stream crossings, removal of dams, restoring eroding streambanks and improving instream habitat.
Qualifications
- The ideal candidate will have several years of experience in working with river systems and have a deep understanding of how to improve the resiliency of aquatic and riparian systems.
- The candidate must be able to coordinate large-scale, long-term habitat restoration and enhancement projects and have proven experience in pulling together private-public partnerships and taking a collaborative approach to solving problems.
- The successful applicant will likely have completed their MS degree in ecology, watershed management, GIS or a related subject.
Specifically:
- Master's degree preferred in a field related to resource conservation
- At least 3 years proven experience with implementing river restoration projects
- Proficiency with ArcGIS
- Highly motivated, able to work well individually and as part of a team
- Experience working with landowners, local units of government, resource agencies and other conservation partners to implement restoration projects
- Ability to guide field crews and work with contractors/volunteers to meet project goals
- Demonstrated experience/background in some of the following areas: BMP design, biotechnical engineering methods, survey and monitoring techniques, etc.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions and ability to supervise people
