Description
Applied Ecological Services is a broad-based ecological consulting, contracting, and restoration firm providing services to foundations, governmental units, corporations, and commercial/residential developers nationwide. Staff consultants, consisting of a multidisciplinary team of botanists, wildlife biologists, wetland scientists, prairie and ecosystem restoration specialists and scientists, manage approximately 100 projects per year.
Specific areas of environmental expertise include wetland delineations; environmental permitting; impact assessment; wetland mitigation and ecological restoration planning, inventory of natural resources; prairie, wetland and woodland restoration and management; wildlife, fisheries, and botanical studies; long-term project management and monitoring; ecological and other scientific research; expert testimony and legal discovery.
Position Overview:
The primary function of the field crew member is to complete restoration work in the field. They perform this by moving soil, operating equipment, setting materials, and digging holes, in restoring grounds by performing the following duties.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare soil for planting seeds and plant plugs by any of the following methods: Apply herbicide to areas for planting/seeding, scarification of soil by hand or with tractor, mowing tall vegetation
- Sow native plant seed install native plant plugs, trees and shrubs according to instructions and planned design of landscaped area
- Implements erosion control methods such as, but not limited to: Straw mulching, Erosion blanket, Silt fencing
- Cut, stack and chip or burn trees and brush
- Operate company equipment (Tractors, all-terrain vehicles, skid-steers, chainsaws, brush saws, etc.)
- Perform maintenance and field repairs on equipment
- At times, direct temporary labor from an outside third party
- Complete project paperwork
- Communicate status of projects to crew leader/project manager
- Water seeded areas, trees, and plants
- Maintain natural areas by: Hand pulling weed species, Spot herbicide weed species, Mowing

- Bachelor's degree (B. A.) in a Natural Resources field from a 4-year college or university; or an Associate's Degree from a 2 year school in a natural resources or related degree and 1 to 2 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Valid Driver's License
- Must be able to obtain Herbicide license within 30 days.
- Able to travel at least 85% of the time (3 to 4 nights a week).
- Must be able to be in a vehicle for at least 3 hours at a time.
