Research Associate/Senior Research Associate, Environmental Regulation and Policy

Applications are invited for the position of Research Associate/Senior
Research Associate in the School of Resources, Environment and Society
(SRES) at the Australian National University. Salary
$40,495-$48,867/$51,330-$$60,562 per annum (plus superannuation). This
position forms part of an Australian Research Council Linkages funded
project beginning in June 2002 in collaboration with the Western Australian
Waters and Rivers Commission and Water Corporation. The project is entitled
"Regulatory design for water quality management in urban catchments".

The project aims to (i) evaluate the effectiveness of current regulatory and
alternative policy strategies for water quality management in urban
catchments; (ii) provide policy prescriptions for the future; and (iii) to
advance regulatory theory by developing a policy framework for effective
catchment management. The project will have a fieldwork focus on the
Swan-Canning river system in Western Australia. The project will be led by
Professor Neil Gunningham of the Australian National University, formerly
Director of the Australian Centre for Environmental Law at the ANU. The
position will be based in Canberra. However, there will be some fieldwork in
Western Australia.

The position is available for two years with a possibility of extension. The
successful applicant will be required to conduct empirically based research
(principally interviews) evaluating policies for improving the management of
pollution from urban catchments, with a focus on alternatives to traditional
regulation. A first degree with 2A Honours or above, or subsequent
qualification at equivalent level, is essential. Some experience of
fieldwork, an advanced research degree and work experience is an advantage.
The salary scale is negotiable, depending on experience and qualifications.

Australian citizens.
