Description

As the largest non-profit organization supporting "citizen science," in its 37-year history, Earthwatch has sponsored over 1000 field research projects in 55 countries across the globe. Earthwatch expeditions and field research centers link volunteers with international scientists working to conserve habitats, species, and cultures.  Since 1971, Earthwatch-sponsored research projects have contributed more than 10 million hours of field research time.

Position Overview:

Research associate (RA) interns will assist the Research Director for Social Sciences and the International Science Program Group (ISPG) in performing comprehensive evaluations of Earthwatch projects in 4 Priority Areas: Climate Change, Oceans, Sustainable Resource Management, and Sustainable Cultures.  Evaluations will focus on measuring outcomes, impacts, and achievements ("Measures of Success") related to conservation, education, ethics, environmental impacts, long-term legacy, and capacity building.

Responsibilities:

We are recruiting assistance for the following initiatives:

  • Assessing the impacts of field-based research projects on local ecological and socio-cultural systems, management plans, and on regional, national, and international policies.
  • Evaluating links between scientific results/recommendations with on-the-ground application, effective partnerships, and community-based initiatives, including ecotourism.
  • Tracking behavioral changes and "influence spheres" for Earthwatch expedition participants.

Qualifications:

Within the Research Department, we emphasize a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach. RA intern teams are composed of undergraduate and graduate students, mid-career professionals, and international affiliates from a wide range of academic and experiential backgrounds.  We encourage use of the internship for academic credit, thesis, or practicum work towards BA/BS/MA/MS/PhD degrees or certificate programs.

Compensation: RA interns earn "expedition credits" (travel certificates), and are invited to participate in all Earthwatch networking and social events. We require a minimum commitment of 120 hours over a period of 1-3 months.

Longer internships of 3 months - 1 year, with commensurate credits, are prioritized (refer to Page 2).

To Apply:

Interested applicants are welcome to send the following materials to Dr. Jeanine Pfeiffer, Research Director for Social Sciences, and the Research Program Coordinator, Gitte Venicx, with the words "SC INTERNSHIP" in the email subject header:

  1. A current resume, detailing relevant field or office experience
  2. A 1-page Statement of Intent outlining qualifications for, and interest in the internship.
  3. A proposed work schedule (total number of hours and time period of availability).
  4. 3 personal and/or professional references, with full contact information.
  5. A recent writing sample (from a blog, academic course, published article, or thesis) excerpt.

This position is based in our Maynard office, located in a historical mill complex 45 minutes west of Cambridge/ Boston, accessible by commuter rail.

Interns will be contacted within 1-2 weeks of submitting their application packets. All interns are required to have individual health insurance. Placement will be subject to qualifications and availability.

Earthwatch is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and supports environmental sustainability and cultural diversity in our workplace.
