The goal of The American Chestnut Foundation is to restore the American chestnut tree to our eastern woodlands to benefit our environment, our wildlife, and our society. The American Chestnut Foundation is restoring a species - and in the process, creating a template for restoration of other tree and plant species.
Position Overview:
The Regional Science Coordinator supports the science-related activities of The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) chapters in MD, VA, and WV and cooperates and participates with other science staff of TACF.
The coordinator supports and advises chapter breeding programs following accepted breeding-program protocol, including such activities as pollination, harvest and seed collection, seed storage and distribution, planting site selection, planning plantings, directing the planting and maintenance of chestnut trees, inoculating and selecting trees, and record keeping.
In addition, the coordinator provides support to chapter programs by facilitating education and outreach opportunities, participating in chapter meetings, and acting as a link between the chapters and TACF's headquarters.
Responsibilities:
- Provide science, breeding, orchard management information, advice and assistance to the chapters in accordance with TACF breeding program protocol and principles of good tree care.
- Stay abreast of advances in chestnut research through various means.
- Communicate regularly with other TACF staff and members.
- Prepare annual reports on the status of programs in your region. Assist in editing or review of TACF publications as requested.
- Write and develop grants to support projects and other chapter activities.
- Work with chapters to establish and maintain Restoration Branches and restoration plantings.
- Promote the work and accomplishments of the state chapters and of TACF.
Qualifications:
- Degree in biological sciences, environmental sciences, forestry, or equivalent.
- Managerial and/or professional experience related to the duties and responsibilities of the position.
- Ability to write and present clearly, to a variety of audiences, on matters of scientific, technical, and administrative nature.
- Knowledge and ability in computer-based spreadsheets, databases, GPS systems, presentation software, reporting systems and other appropriate software programs.
- Knowledge of the principles, concepts, and methodologies in the field of biological sciences, particularly genetics.
- Knowledge and ability to use standard guides such as county soils maps, weather, etc.
- Experience in tree-orchard operation and management is preferred, but not necessary.
- Ability to travel, including on weekends. This position requires approximately 20% travel time.
Compensation: Final salary will be based upon qualifications and experience. This position enjoys a full benefits package including health insurance and a retirement fund.
The ultimate location for this position is somewhat negotiable, but we prefer to house the position at the Virginia Department of Forestry offices in Charlottesville, VA.
