Description
The Northeast Region is comprised of the following 8 states for which the Director of the Northeast Region (DNR) has primary responsibility: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
The DNR occupies a senior management position within the Foundation and represents the Foundation for all regional contacts and activities. The DNR plans and implements regional programs, and allocates, through grant making, federal appropriations and other funds received by the Foundation.
The DNR is also responsible for managing the regional budget, and for fundraising to support the Foundation’s operating budget. The DNR supervises staff and ensures that regional activities are coordinated with, and contribute to, national program efforts of the Foundation.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1) Supervise the work of others, including those responsible for grants management and regional fundraising.
Achieve regional and national fundraising goals.
2) Ensure funding proposals are completed and meets with potential donors.
3) Assist the national development staff to identify potential donors for national scale fundraising efforts.
4) Responsible for creating/updating and managing the efforts identified in the Regional Strategic Plan as well as providing input to program initiatives in the Foundation’s national Conservation Plan.
5) Develop and manage regional budget in coordination with relevant national and regional staff.
6) Coordinate project selection regionally and as a member of national team that selects projects for funding.
7) Research and write documents on current natural resource conservation issues and the Foundation's past, present and future involvement.
8) Develop and manage cooperative agreements, memoranda of understanding, letters of agreement, and contractual agreements on behalf of the Foundation (with appropriate coordination amongst administrative staff and legal counsel).
9) Participate in "national" program management through reviewing project proposals and participating in national steering committee meetings.
10) Communicate with local, municipal, state and regional representatives of federal agencies regarding project selection and developing new programmatic opportunities for the Foundation.
11) Build regional Congressional and constituency support for the Foundation, represent the Foundation at local meetings with Congressional representatives/staffs and coordinate same with national office.
12) Make presentations to local, municipal, NGO, state and federal agencies, etc. representing the Foundation's local and national programs.
13) Ensure high quality of "customer service" to local grantees, agency partners, donors, etc.
14) Provide support to Foundation Board of Directors including: making presentations on regionally-based projects and Regional Office efforts at Board meetings and serving as “quality control” for all regional Board Book submissions.
15) Work with Northeast Region Conservation Council (Council) members on program initiatives, fundraising strategies, and regional events. Work with Council to identify fundraising opportunities and potential national Board members.
16) Respond to requests from local media for information on projects and activities of the Regional Office in coordination with the Foundation’s Communications staff.
17) Develop and manage programs that generate alternative sources of revenue such as management fees and resource damage awards.
Qualifications:
1) A masters degree preferred in a field related to fish, wildlife or plant conservation.
2) A minimum of 5 years work experience with either private natural resource conservation organizations, state or federal wildlife agencies, or Congressional experience working with natural resource agencies.
3) Experience dealing with business, private or corporate sector. Experience managing a multi-staff office and fundraising strongly desired.
4) Excellent research, writing and oral communication skills.
5) Knowledge of natural resource conservation issues and policies on a state, regional, and national level.
6) Demonstrated computer and writing skills.
7) Knowledge of the appropriations and other legislative process helpful, but not necessary.
8) Ability to travel regionally and nationally, often with little notice.
9) Ability to work with others at many levels, in small groups and inter-organizational and interagency situations.
