Reporting to the Director of Environmental Stewardship for the University, the Recycling and Solid Waste Coordinator monitors recycling and solid waste management services and coordinates policy to ensure that service is environmentally responsible, reliable, legally compliant, and cost-effective University-wide. The Coordinator works closely with the Facilities Departments at Morningside, the Medical Center, and Lamont-Doherty campuses, and consults with other members of the University community. 

The Coordinator advises the Director of Environmental Stewardship and proposes initiatives that will maximize waste diversion before disposal, including surplus recovery and reuse systems and construction and demolition debris recycling systems. The Coordinator will establish, promote and maintain inter- and intra-campus recycling competitions and other incentive projects aimed at diverting waste from landfills. The Coordinator will answer questions relating to recycling and reuse practices and work with other departments to resolve them. 

The Coordinator will track waste streams and operations and prepare reports on recycling and waste minimization efforts, as well as make recommendations to Facilities operations on systems improvements and equipment. 

The Coordinator will also supervise management of a furniture and equipment reuse and recycling program to enable maximum recovery, storage, and distribution of bulk items including furniture, large appliances, building components including carpeting, scrap metal, and wall coverings, and student furnishings, especially at move-outs and prior to demolitions or renovations, in close coordination with other departments of the University. 

Bachelor's degree in a related field and a minimum of five years of related experience. Previous experience in professional solid waste and recycling management required. Excellent verbal and written communications skills and strong computer skills, including knowledge of spreadsheets; project management skills; and ability to work independently and in a team environment necessary. Thorough knowledge of New York City recycling ordinances, regulations and practices required. Knowledge of sustainability concepts and policy and programs development preferred.
