HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION
The Public Relations Representative practices ethical communications and professionalism: researches, writes, edits a variety of communications materials for the media. The position reports to the Public Relations Manager
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Generates media coverage for the conservation work of the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance staff.
- Responds to inquiries from media with inquiries about the organization, support fact checking from media.
- Acts as a media relations liaison for the organization.
- Plan, organize, coordinate and report on multiple projects, often under tight time constraints.
- Serves as a researcher for the creation of a variety of communications materials including press releases, advisories, and fact sheets.
- Take on responsibilities and work independently towards the completion of public relations department projects for the San Diego Zoo, Safari Park and San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.
- Provides support to the public relations team during crisis situations.
- Advises and supports San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance spokespersons during media interviews.
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
Manage, track and update media coverage including TV clippings. Compile reports and plans on public relations activities, strategies and results and assist with coordinating FAM trips, press conferences and onsite media opportunities. Secure media coverage for conservation stories and attendance driving opportunities.
JOB EXPERIENCE
- Must have 2 years of experience working in a public relations agency.
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, journalism, or a related field or equivalent specialized training required.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
- Media relations knowledge.
- Effective writing skills required.
- Internet communications knowledge required.
- Knowledge of Associated Press style.
- Adept at using Microsoft suite of software including Word, PowerPoint, Excel.
- Adept at using Cision database software.
- Ability to adapt complex topics and materials into comprehensible communications for targeted audiences.
- Communicate effectively in verbal and written communications with colleagues in a diverse environment.
- Ability to multi-task and think creatively and analytically; excellent problem-solving skills.
- Work effectively in a team environment and ability to work in a large organization with multiple layers
- Ability to manage projects against deadlines.
- Basic knowledge of wildlife conservation and zoology

- Experience working with several levels of management
