Volunteer and Internship Opportunities at the SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS INSTITUTE

The SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS INSTITUTE (SBI) is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to bringing about increased understanding of, and commitment to, the concept of sustainability within business and communities worldwide. SBI was founded in 1994 by business leaders who recognize sustainability as one strategic driver for enhanced competitiveness and profitability. SBI continues to serve today's most influential decision-makers, corporate executives and future leaders with conferences, seminars, media and education initiatives and user group programs.

SBI is currently seeking the support of volunteers and interns to work in maintaining and developing our current initiatives. Current volunteers include former and current business leaders, community participants, interested individuals, and university students. Volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in initiating, implementing and communicating equitable worldwide sustainability practices to global business leaders and their organizations. Our mission is to benefit the public through outreach initiatives that encourage business leaders to identify, create, implement and communicate economically viable sustainability practices. Our major activities include:

* SBI Seal of Sustainability
* SBI CEO Forums on Sustainable Business (five previous conferences)
* Media Outreach through national network TV shows and documentaries on sustainable business. Cronkite Productions and Public Broadcasting System (PBS) have participated in the first of a series.
* Future Leaders projects with business executives
* Sustainable Business User Groups

Available Positions:

GRANT WRITING & FUNDRAISING COORDINATOR
This position is for those with a strong interest in grant writing and fundraising and provides the opportunity to develop skills in non-profit fundraising.

Responsibilites:
* Write grant applications, final reports, and grant letters
* Assist in the assembly of grant packages and developing support materials for grants * Research new and potential grant opportunities
* Coordinate special events and mailings
* Maintain database with foundation and donor records

Qualifications:
Interest in environmental and sustainability issues. Experience with Microsoft Word/ Excel. Experience with formal business documents and communication is helpful.

FUTURE LEADERS COORDINATOR
This position is for those with a strong interest in public outreach.

Responsibilities:
* Help shape outreach to schools (elementary through college)
* Coordinate Future Leaders programs to promote sustainable living
* Facilitate luncheons with future and current leaders
* Research interested institutions on a local and national level

Qualifications:
Interest in environmental and sustainable efforts. Experience with Microsoft Word/ Excel. Experience with formal business documents and communication is helpful.

MEDIA OUTREACH COORDINATOR
This position is for those with an interest in public relations.

Responsibilities:
* Research current events/ sustainable issues as well as other sustainable organizations
* Support activities of the Media Team
* Assist in creation of office publications
* Coordinate quarterly newsletter
* Work with webmaster to maintain website
* Access relationship with press and other organizations

Qualifications:
Interest in environmental and sustainable efforts. Experience with Microsoft Word/ Excel. Experience with formal business documents and communication is helpful. Knowledge of webpage design a plus.

SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS USER GROUP COORDINATOR
This position is for those who are interested in helping businesses implement sustainability and environmental programs.

Responsibilities:
* Research private sector companies as prospective participants
* Contact companies through email and phone correspondence
* Coordinate lunch meetings and guest speakers
* Maintain membership section of website
* Maintain and organizing database

Qualifications:
Interest in environmental and sustainable efforts. Experience with Microsoft Word/ Excel. Experience with formal business documents and communication is helpful.

Hours:
SBI is seeking volunteers who can work a minimum of 10-15 hours per week. Daily hours are flexible.

Compensation:
Positions are unpaid. However, SBI can coordinate with your academic department to arrange for credit. Funding may also be available through campus work-study programs/employment grants; check with your school financial aid or career placement office.
