Position Overview 

Climate Central seeks a Program Specialist for its new and growing World Weather Attribution Program, an international effort to operationalize the science of extreme weather event attribution.

The incumbent will work with a small team of scientists, communications experts and other program staff to help monitor and identify program focal areas (i.e. specific weather events), analyze and synthesize climate information, and support the development of science-based communications for decision-makers, NGOs, the scientific community, media and general public.

This position is located at Climate Central's headquarters in Princeton, New Jersey. 

Responsibilities 

  • Monitor information (fast-breaking and long-term trend analyses) on world weather events for program attention 
  • Support partners in weather event definition, and gather real-time information on societal context surrounding hazards (vulnerability and exposure)
  • Manage, update and utilize in-house extreme event attribution database of peer-reviewed literature to guide decision-making and generate program communications 
  • Serve as a principal liaison with science, academic and government institutions; communications specialists; Climate Central staff, and other partners to deliver program activities
  • Participate in and/or convene meetings to facilitate decision-making, develop and implement specific communications strategies 
  • Produce program communications materials, such as fact sheets, as needed
  • Help develop and maintain program website, including content generation
  • Prepare and/or support development of program documents, proposals and reports for use with funders, internal reporting requirements, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned 

Qualifications 

  • Graduate degree in atmospheric or other environmental sciences, international development, communications or business administration
  • Working knowledge of climate change issues, including science and risk management
  • Facility with scientific information and ability to translate it for a broad range of audiences
  • Ability to collect, analyze and synthesize technical information, including communicating uncertainty
  • Significant demonstrated project management experience
  • Ability to meet deadlines and prioritize under time constraints and multiple demands
  • Ability to coordinate among team members and across organizations
  • Collaborative and team-oriented approach
  • Strong oral and written communications skills, including regular and timely communications to key colleagues and other stakeholders
  • Sound judgment and ability to work creatively and independently 
  • Minimum 3 years relevant work experience in a not-for-profit, research institution or consulting firm setting. Previous experience working in an international organization or with geographically-dispersed colleagues or partners preferred 
  • Second language (French or Spanish) a plus
