Description
The Greater Yellowstone Coalition seeks a Program Director with vision to lead and inspire program staff in the Bozeman, Montana; Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Jackson, Wyoming offices. GYC is a regionally based non-profit conservation organization with national scope. We are looking for an experienced leader with proven management experience, and with the ability to both synthesize a variety of complex issues and to guide experienced staff to strategically move issues forward in an integrated fashion.
The ideal candidate will have a commitment to supporting and developing a talented program staff, and working closely with other staff in the organization to further its mission. A keen interest in natural resource protection, public policy development and implementation is preferred; knowledge of both private lands/growth-related issues and public lands conservation issues is desired. GYC?s issues include national parks, forest management, growth management and private lands conservation, biodiversity, oil and gas development, and water quality issues within the 18 million-acre Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. This position is based in the Bozeman, Montana office. GYC is an equal opportunity employer.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Lead, manage and inspire a program staff of eight conservation professionals in the Bozeman home office, and the Idaho and Wyoming state offices.
2. Lead the program staff in identifying emerging issues, integrating present programs, creating and implementing short- and long-term strategy planning and ensuring that science forms the foundation for public policy and planning decisions.
3. Oversee the development of planning and implementation strategies that maximize GYC?s influence on public policies at the local, state, regional and national levels in a coordinated manner.
4. Serve as spokesperson with the media and the general public.
5. Foster and build upon coalitions among GYC and local, regional and national organizations and forge new partnerships with non-traditional constituents to strengthen the region?s conservation movement.
6. Ensure the integration of the program staff?s work with the communications, development and administration departments within GYC.
7. Participate in fundraising efforts for GYC by working closely with the development staff on grant proposals, donor and membership activities.
8. Serve on GYC?s management team.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. The ability to envision a conservation-based future for Greater Yellowstone and an understanding of strategies and policy changes required to implement the vision.
2. Proven leadership qualities and managerial skills in a team-based environment.
3. The ability to synthesize complex issues into an integrated and cohesive program.
4. Proven experience and success in planning and implementing strategies aimed at bringing about public policy change.
5. Strong communications skills.
6. Experience in public speaking and communications work, including the ability to work well with the media and to articulate organizational positions and concerns.
7. Experience using a variety of tools including advocacy, coalition building, grassroots activism and litigation.
8. Experience organizing and mobilizing public support, particularly in rural communities.
9. The ability to work successfully at both the grassroots level and in Washington, D.C.
10. Demonstrated ability and willingness to work with the development staff in representing GYC in various fundraising activities.
11. Experience in the conservation movement, on both public and private lands issues,
preferred.
12. Familiarity with the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and issues in the West desired.
13 . The ability and willingness to travel, both within the GYE and the U.S.
