Description

Background:

The Amazon Alliance for Indigenous and Traditional Peoples of the Amazon Basin
is an initiative born out of the partnership between indigenous and traditional
peoples of the Amazon and groups and individuals who share their concerns for
the future of the Amazon and its peoples. There are over eighty
non-governmental organizations from the North and South active in the Alliance.
The Amazon Alliance works to defend the rights, territories, and environment of
indigenous and traditional peoples of the Amazon Basin.

Duties:

The Program Coordinator will be an integral member of a small team that
coordinates a large and effective alliance between Amazonian indigenous and
traditional peoples and environmental, human rights, Native American, and
support organizations working to defend the rights and territories of Amazonian
peoples.

The Program Coordinator will facilitate and promote collaboration among
Amazon Alliance member organizations on priority issues, and provide support for
activities of Amazon Alliance working groups.

The position is in Washington, D.C.
and includes some travel.

Plan, develop strategy, and coordinate initiatives in support of Amazonian
peoples and their environment in collaboration with Amazon Alliance member
organizations. Assist member organizations in the planning, promotion, and
implementation of Amazon Alliance working group activities. Support Amazon
Alliance member organization and coordinating office initiatives by organizing
delegations to Washington, DC, meetings with government and bank officials,
media events, letter writing campaigns, etc.

Oversee the approval, financing,
and reporting processes for working group activities.

Assist with the planning
and coordination of Amazon Alliance meetings and events.

Maintain information
networks in key program areas.

Qualifications:

In addition to demonstrated commitment to environmental and indigenous rights
issues, the ideal candidate will have experience working directly with indigenous
and/or traditional peoples, and facilitating collaborative work between diverse
partners.

Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and either
Spanish or Portuguese are required. Candidates should be able to assume
significant responsibility with minimal supervision, have excellent interpersonal
skills, and be able to manage multiple tasks.

In addition, a background in
environmental studies or related field, and skills in media relations would be
helpful.

Starting Date: January 2003
