~ Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC), a national nonprofit trails, walking and bicycling advocacy organization with more than 160,000 members and supporters, is the nation's largest trails organization dedicated to connecting people and communities by creating a nationwide network of public trails, many from former rail lines and connecting corridors. ~

Founded in 1986, RTC's national office is located in Washington, D.C., with regional offices in California, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Position Overview 

Rails-to-Trails Conservancy seeks a part-time Program Coordinator for our Western Regional office in Oakland, CA. Please, only local applicants should apply.

This is a great opportunity for someone interested in trails and how they facilitate active transportation, recreation, and healthy, sustainable communities. The position is 20-25 hours per week for one year (with potential for extension) beginning July/August 2015.  

Responsibilities 

Support our trail development and policy programs by assisting with outreach and community engagement on our active trail planning projects and research and drafting of blog posts, issue briefs and training materials relating to active transportation, recreation and trail planning/design/maintenance issues;

  • Support our Bay Area Trails Collaborative effort by coordinating with partners on policy, technical assistance and trail event planning activities; and
  • Assist with program and organizational management including finance, fundraising and our intern program. 


Qualifications 

  • The successful candidate will have excellent people skills, outstanding written and verbal communication skills, and be highly organized and detail-oriented;
  • Have a college degree and 1-2 years' experience in transportation/recreation planning, public health, sustainable communities or environmental policy, and/or political advocacy and campaign work;
  • Demonstrated interest in trails/open space/biking and walking issues;
  • Be resourceful and able to work independently; and
  • A sense of humor, enthusiasm and flexibility to help where needed are essential! 

Compensation: Salary: $20/hour, no benefits.
